    From whose perspective?

The Padres have to love that deal.

Maybe, but that was a hell of a price tag. Alonso probably would have gotten a shot as a regular by now if not for Votto. If I remember correctly, Alonso played in the outfield, but he is really a first baseman. The major downside for the Padres is they already have a prospect at first in Rizzo, though he seems to need more time in the minors.

Volquez still has ability and moving to Petco can do wonders for a pitcher, though obviously his value has dropped considerably. I know nothing about Brad Boxberger, but Grandal is supposed to be a good prospect at catcher. Again, maybe a year away.

Grandal and Alonso were expendable -- it's really a good deal on both sides.

Expendable in the sense that the Reds have an established star at Alonso's position and another top prospect at Grandal's, but still they had value.

Overall, I agree. I think both teams benefit.

I really like the deal from the Padres perspective, in that Petco seems to artificially build up pitcher values but other teams are still willing to trade for them. I think it would be easier for them to build up some more pitching from within as opposed to offense.

Trading hitting for pitching is very risky.

Remember, Cano could be a Twin right now.

Jim Bowden says the Padres have a lot of interest in Matt Garza.

Jason Kubel to the D'backs (2 years, $15 million):

Interesting, in that I didn't think Kubel could play the outfield full-time, and Arizona had a Gold Glover (Gerardo Parra) in left field last year.

Parra will be the fourth outfielder for the, next season.

If that's the Nats' big move this offseason, I'm going to be really, really disappointed.
