Better than it was, by a lot. Still not great, by a lot. With LaRoche back, they're very solid at 1B, 2B and 3B. Ramos is an excellent catcher. Still not sold on Desmond on SS and the outfield is anybody's guess. Shaky at best with the current alignment.

Desmond did improve by a lot last year over the previous year. But it was a very, very low bar.

Well, no one knows how the Marlins' park will play, but other than the Phillies, Gonzalez is heading to a solid division for a pitcher.

Law isn't saying Gonzalez will be a bust; just that he'll leave Nats fans expecting more, given the price paid and the season he just had in Oakland.

He doesn't have to carry the whole load - no way he's No. 1 starter with SS there. And Jordan Zimmermann is pretty good, too. I don't think anyone is expecting Cy Youngs. Just a very solid addition to the rotation.

Norris, I think, may be a "faux" prospect and the Nats have other catchers. Peacock will probably turn out to be the best of the lot. He and Milone can pitch in the majors now. Cole is a couple of years away.

Right. And I'm sure Gonzalez will be fine. And the Nats certainly will have an above-average starting rotation.

But I'm leaning toward Law's argument that giving up three of your top 10 prospects is a high price for a No. 3 starter.

As noted, he may well be right. And No. 2 - I think he's better than Jordan Zimmerman.

The Nats have done a lot of proven (or somewhat given they're the Nats) for prospects in recent years. Nice to see them able to go the other way, even if they may have thrown one too many chips on the table. Still surprised they kept their big-league core intact.

So who do they trade Desmond for?

And what makes you think Norris is a fake? I thought he was pretty legit?

He fell off last year a bit and beyond that, nothing but a hunch. I could be WAY wrong. Even so, I still like the varsity catcher a lot.

Desmond and Lannan/Detwiler for a CF but I'll be damned if I can think of which one. Espinosa to short, Lombardozzi to second.

Get that CFer, and that's a lot of money to pay LaRoche to sit on the bench. It ain't like Harper is going to spend Memorial Day in a half-empty park while everyone watches the Orange in another lacrosse title game.

It's only one year - and 8 mil is a drop in the bucket!

Only eight million? My girlfriend and her mother both used to work for the Lerners. Fairly close to them, physically at least. During the whole Venezuelan kidnapping thing, they were only half-joking when they'd say the Lerners would forsake the ransom and just call up the next catcher from the minors.

Well, their next move is to open the vault for Zimmerman - so 8 mil will seem like chump change.
