Yep. Let's not confuse this with any "Moneyball"-related strategy.

Every move is made with one eye on getting out of the Coliseum.

Granted a lot of this is probably at the beck and call of Lewis Wolff, not Beene. The former is very much a bottom-liner when it comes to the teams he runs (A's and MLS Earthquakes).

DeRosa is a good "clubhouse guy" too.

I'm not overjoyed at giving up both Millone AND Peacock in the deal, but Cole, I'm sure, was a must for the A's. Still, I'm not going to complain. This Gio guy, who I've never really heard of until this winter for some reason, seems legit. Who would have thought the Nats could have an overqualified No. 3 pitcher? And have their top 3 guys locked down for the next four (or is it five?) years? Kinda silly.

85-90 wins isn't crazy talk in NatsTown anymore.

Well, the Nats won 80 this year. With LaRoche hurt all year. Zimmerman for half of it. Werth doing not a lot (though he ended up with 20 HRs) and essentially no Strasburg.

The same core returns, plus you figure a bit more out of Z-n and LaR. 30 starts for SS sted 5.

Hell, if Morse just knew how to take a walk, they might have won 85 last year.

I suspect some publications will pick the Nats as high as second in that division. I wouldn't but, as you noted, not crazy talk. A lot of good, young, key pieces.

Now they need to lock up Zimmerman and head to spring training.

    Yup.

But I just can't shake this bad feeling I have about the Zimmerman thing. I hope like hell I'm wrong.

Moddy, you also have to remember that the other NL East teams got better. I'm not sure if the Nationals have 85 wins in them, but they're much improve with the new additions they've made over the off-season.

Do you believe Bryce, makes the jump this year? Yes, I called him Bryce on purpose just for you ;-)

13 million a year and full no-trade seems like a mountain of money to give Beltran.

The Mets got better? The Braves got better? How did the Phillies get better (they were already better than the Nats and remain that way)?

The Marlins did get better but we'll see how quickly Hanley R. makes the whole thing unravel.

Alright, I should have said the Phillies and Marlins got better.

The Phillies added Jonathan Papelbon, they also added two veterans in Thome and Nix. That makes them better in my book.

Nats won 7 of the last 9 against Philly, including a four-game sweep in September. And won the season series 10-8.

Not that it means jack shit. I just enjoy pointing that out.
