Nice San Francisco Chronicle story on former Giants shortstop (and A's manager) Alvin Dark, who turned 90 on Saturday:

    Maholm to the Cubs.

Well, I'm getting what I asked for. The Cubs are loading up this offseason on guys who saber-projections really love but who have had rocky actual production stats. It's pure Moneyball mode.

The organization should be making regular, rather than sporadic, first-round exits within a few years.

This passage floored me for how far advanced it was:

I accept Dark's explanation, but the reaction to this in society so many years ago (before I was born, to be sure) is surprising given the recalcitrance toward civil rights that still existed in places deep into the 1960s.

It was San Francisco, which I guess explains a lot.

Like I said when it happened: The Papelbon signing was way too much. Teams are getting savvier about how much they'll pay for relief pitchers, who are too volatile to give long-term deals to.

    Geico should sell Boras insurance.

Heard on the radio here in SoCal that Halos are looking at Kerry Wood as their closer.

Gun-totin' Luke Scott to the Rays for 1 year, $5M (with a $6M option for 2013).

That's good value for a guy who might hit 25 homers next year.

Nice idea for the Rays, although we said the same thing about Manny last year. Still, I'd have rather had Scott at 1 year, $5 million than giving Beltran his money, if I'm the Rays and have their market conditions at play.
