Jesus Montero to the Mariners for Michael Pineda.

AJ who? He quickly drops to a number 4 or 5.

Pineda for Montero's actually a fair deal. I'm sure Pineda's gonna be great, but if you can trade an elite arm for an elite bat, you do it every time.

And let's hope for Kuroda's sake he works out better than the last two Japanese pitchers with the Yankees ...

Also, both the Yankees and Mariners address a need with this trade.

I think Montero's elite bat status is still in question, especially as a DH or a poor defensive 1b. That's definitely his ceiling, but there's still some "very good but not elite" downside in there somewhere. Something like an .850 OPS.

That and the fact that they got the far better throw-in is why I prefer this deal from the Yankees' side, but I understand why Seattle made it.

I do, too. Desperation that leads to more bad decisions. I'll believe Montero is anywhere close to Pineda's level when I see it. And the small sample so far isn't enough to do that.

Given that he's going from Safeco to Yankee Stadium, I doubt Pineda's immediately going to step in and be CC Sabathia Jr. He really wore down late in the season last year.

Montero's got a .501 SLG in more than 2,000 minor league plate appearances, and he just turned 22. He's gonna hit at the major-league level.

Thirded. Montero's only super-valuable, as valuable as Pineda, if you think he stays at catcher. Pretty much no scout that's seen him thinks he can stay at catcher, so what do you have? Another 1B/DH type that needs ABs at the major league level, like Justin Smoak. I feel like if they wanted to deal Pineda, they probably could have gotten more.

Still has to show he can do it in the majors, something Pineda has already done.

Or 6 or 7. You've got CC, Pineda, Nova and Kuroda for your top four. AJ's got to battle with Garcia and Hughes for No. 5.
