Of course, while overlooking that he's also not mentioning that Withey, Young and Johnson sat out big chunks of the game in foul trouble after they were on the other end of some equally poor officiating.

The game was a two-and-a-half hour ref clusterfuck, not just the no-call at then end of regulation. When you look at KU's foul trouble, the number of free throws each team shot and how Iowa State's offense is basically designed around setting illegal screens to get open for 3's, one might argue Iowa State benefited more from the clusterfuckery over the course of the evening.

I'm a BBOC alum and fan. Yes, the officiating was bad at the end of regulation. The actual foul call with 4.9 seconds left was worse than the no-call. But it was also bad long before then - the third foul on Jeff Withey for a charge was embarrassingly awful - and even in overtime. Iowa State perhaps should have noticed that Elijah Johnson was heating up and tried to defend him. Or try to attack the basket at the end of regulation instead of jacking up another three. Or make one more free throw.

    "But ..."

Just admit it sucked and move on. Stop qualifying it.

But it also displays the trouble with college basketball

    No consequences.

An outstanding game. Excellent shooting. Leaders popping up on both teams.

Yet it won't matter because we only are about the tournament and the regular season has little value.

In what sport would that game matter?

It sure as hell mattered to KU fans who don't want to see this conference title streak come to an end. And it must have mattered to the Iowa State fan who came onto the court and tried to attack Bill Self when he got done talking to Holly Rowe.

    Mattered for 45 minutes.

About as long as Norm Stewart's Big 8 titles at Kemper would last before the inevitable first round loss.

The call needed to come from the official closest to the camera, and it looked like he got blocked on the play because he didn't move. The official on the end line could have come in with a call though.

Yep. If the guy across from the table doesn't get it, the guy under the basket has to get it.

KU drew a technical foul, an intentional foul, got whistled for more personal fouls (22-19) and attempted fewer free throws (34-27), which was odd against a team that made only eight two-point baskets. Iowa State was in the bonus well before KU in both halves. And KU's frontcourt fouled out.

But yes, all the refs' calls obviously benefited KU.
