It's somewhere in between. They laid a legitimate beatdown on Duke (let up at the end to let them get close), but they're not as good a team as they were last night. They're much better than BC and FSU, but they can't win on the road to save their lives.

Get the Wahoos in a close game and they'll fold. That's the bottom line. I don't know if it's coaching or player fuckups, but it's who they are right now. And they're probably going to miss the tournament because of it.

Do they have a player that can create their own shot when they need it?

Evans can create anything he wants - he'll just miss 70 percent of the time.

The serious answer to your question is probably Justin Anderson. But he's fallen off over the past month and seems to have lost some confidence.

The last time Virginia went to consecutive NCAA tournaments was 1994 and 1995. This is a fine season.

Someone tell me why Shaka Smart hasn't left the Commonwealth and go to greener pastures.

Not saying that he should, just wondering why he is still there.

I don't think many Virginia fans came into the season expecting this team to make the NCAA Tournament or finish better than .500 in the ACC after losing Scott and Zeglinski, so based on preseason expectations I'm not sure it's a disappointment. It's disappointing at this point because if the Cavs had just won a couple of games against bad teams they'd be in very good shape.

Joe Harris improved a bunch during the offseason and Akil Mitchell stepped up big in the absence of Mike Scott, but UVa is nowhere near as talented as Miami, Duke, UNC or NC State, the other teams with a winning record in the conference, three of which it beat.

    Maybe he likes it there.

He's making pretty close to the amount of money a lot of the big schools would pay him in a nice town with a reasonable cost of living coaching a program where he knows he can win games and they aren't going to run him out of town if he misses the NCAA Tournament for a year or two.

I like Joe Harris a lot. Great nose for the basket.

One reminder to cheer Big Circus up: UVa has everybody but Evans back next year and adds 4-star point guard Devon Hall and transfer big man Anthony Gill.

I saw them at Kemper in '95. Needless to say, there were lots of Rock Chalk Bargains on the streets of KC that Sunday.

He might not be the smartest person in the house, either.

Another VCU coach, Grant, is sort of flopping along at Alabama. Smart could walk across the James River in Richmond. He is probably the biggest celebrity in town when Lincoln is not filming. Why would he want to change that?

And if one and done keeps up, he will have as good as chance as anyone to win an NCAA Title in a few years.
