Flores got a bit of a shot in 2008, when they gave him 300 at-bats, but he has been hurt a lot. They may need to go get some help from outside the organization if Ramos is lost for the season. I wouldn't want to count on Flores.

Maybe they can offer the Pirates a warm can of beer for Rod Barajas, who at least knows what he's doing behind the plate even if he has completely lost it as a hitter.

Maybe the Nats call up Sandy Leon from Double A. Moddy's beat writer says he's tearing it up at Harrisburg. hitting .319 with .356 OBP and .457 SLG.

I wouldn't offer an empty can of beer for Barajas. Not even the 7 empties of Natty Ice in my trash can right now.

I don't think Hamilton will win the batting title. He's been red-hot and only leads Jeter in batting by a mere 15 points. He'll start to cool off and Jeter will surge ahead. But if he stays healthy it's going to be tough for anyone to beat him in HRs and RBIs.

I feel pretty confident saying no one will hit .400 in our lifetime.

I feel pretty confident in saying someone will hit .400 in my lifetime. Assuming I don't get hit by a truck. Tomorrow. Fuck. I'm screwed.

Manky, sock puppetry is a difficult enough skill to master even without introducing math errors.

I'm about 95 percent in agreement with you.

The 5 percent of me that still hopes thinks it'll happen at least one more time realizes that it's going to take a perfect storm with these factors:

    - Eagle-eye contact (Ichiro in '04)
    - Walks a TON (>100 times) that season (Eddie Stanky)
    - Extended DL stint (Brett in '80)

The walks are the key. The next player who hits .400 doesn't need to be having a lot of 2-for-5 games. He needs to be having a shit-ton of 1-2, 2 BB games.

Here's the line I would expect to see from such a player:

    Code:

G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG
    120 530 405 110 163 35 8 21 85 100 30 .402 .496 .684

    It's nobody's. I made it up.

EDIT: Although after looking it up, Tris Speaker in 1925 isn't terribly far off:

    Code:

Year Age Tm Lg G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+

I'd also think that if someone does hit .400, it'd have to be a lefty, or a switchhitter who hits predominiately lefty. Those two extra steps out of the batter's box can make a world of difference.
