If Cowley hates him I might be persuaded to amend my view.

I'll give you that running-on-the-field incident, bigpern. Didn't know about that.

But check any non-Yankees AL East message board for the high regard in which this specimen is held. He might be the most hated guy in the division.

non-Yankees AL East message boards are a perfectly reasonable place to find unbiased opinions of Yankees players

Isn't it the case that any metric is flawed? Given that, is there some version (or another) of WAR that tends to be consistent?

But a majority of the people that claim it is wrong do so without understanding how it is created or what it is intended for. That is not okay in any data evaluation in any field. And again, a stat is never wrong just because it does not match up with a preconceived notion. Lawrie's defensive score is probably wrong, but we need to look into why so we can see if whatever anomaly is happening with him is happening with others. The fact that +/- has never had a score even in the stratosphere as being this wonky, gives me the assumption that this is anomaly and not something innately flawed with the stat. The fact is, +/- correlates fairly well with the other metrics, most eye-witness report, and things even as simple as range factor. Everybody knows that the defensive element in WAR is the most difficult to quantify and the aspect most likely to create interesting result. The creators of WAR know that. Everybody knows that. That doesn't mean that WAR doesn't work pretty well a majority of the time or that using stats completely void of contextual factors, such as RBI, HR, W-L is better.

Remember, WAR is not a stat, it a concept. brWAR is a stat and fgWAR is a stat. WAR is a framework.

My god, was Matusz ever throwing BP tonight,

The Angels' 26th hitter of the night, Peter Bourjos, had their 13th hit, a 2-run homer. Buck mercifully pulled Matusz's plug then, but it's 5-1 with C.J. Wilson on the other side.

Aroldis Chapman strikes out the last guy in Cincinnati with a 99 mph fastball, then celebrates by doing two forward rolls toward home plate.
    That was ... original.
