This has been one brutal stretch, that's for sure, and the Buccos coming up to end the first half. But as Moddy has been telling us ... the Nats can hit!

Yeah, they can. Too bad no one wants to talk about them!! Going tonight and Sunday, was out there Wednesday. Morse and Zimmerman have gotten hot and the pitching hasn't cooled. Storen and Werth will join the fray soon. People around here are starting to feel like maybe, just maybe they're for real.

How are those people going to feel when they shut Strasburg down?

Listened to a talk show today - remains to be seen but I get the sense many are accepting it as what they have to do for his long-term health.

Curious to see if they go out and get an extra pitcher. Their "extras" so to speak are now in Oakland, no one really in system who is ready. Wang went on the DL, probably never to be seen again.

I'm curious to see if they don't have some long, heartfelt discussions if they're still in the hunt and SS nears his limit.

Indeed, they gave up No. 1 and No. 1a in the system in Milone and Peacock. Danny Rosenbaum had a sizzling start in AA, but has inexplicably gone belly-up over the past month.

I hope they don't think that John Lannan is the answer.

I was thinking the same thing.

Meanwhile, the Mets are still in line for a playoff spot with the break in three days. I never would have dreamed that this season. I still think they're doing it with smoke and mirrors. That bullpen is horrendous and the lineup has one guy who scares anybody.

Man, I just don't buy this. Not in baseball. I would be open to some hard evidence that it happens, though, or has happened. Probably tough to isolate, though.

Meh, I dunno. You may be right. I thought I detected that when Utley came back last year. I looked; they went 6-1 in his first seven games back ... but then 2-7 in the next nine.

For the most part I don't either but I wouldn't completely discount it. I believe this can have more of an effect in other sports.

What the hell good is keeping Strasburg healthy if he doesn't actually, you know, pitch? I hate this line of thinking by the Nats and I have serious doubts it will actually accomplish anything.

He could tear an elbow ligament on the first pitch of his next start. Maybe they should just shut him down now.

I can't wait until he's 35 and they finally take the training wheels off.
