Strange moment in Chicago: Bottom of the first, Sox with runners on the corners, two out. Romero strikes out Rios with a breaking ball in the dirt. Ump rings him up, Rios heads back to the dugout, Jays off the field, telecast to commercial. Then it comes back, Romero back on the mound, Rios back at the plate, apparently the Sox appealed and the first-base ump - standing 90 feet or so away from the plate - determined it was a foul tip, even if the home plate ump, who you would think would have a better view, called him out. Rios hammers the next pitch up the middle, only a diving stop by Escobar to get the force prevents at least one run from scoring.

And this was some guy named D.J. Raeburn, not one of the usual suspects like C.B. Bucknor.

And Zack Greinke gets tossed four pitches into his start against the Astros after spiking the ball after a close call at first. Saw the highlight, seemed to be a wee bit of an overreaction by the ump.

And Giancarlo Stanton is pulled from the game after the third inning.

    How about a total overeaction?

If I had to guess, it was Angel Hernandez?

I also could guess CB Bucknor, but I know he's in Detroit this weekend.

    Sam Holbrook was the ump

Yea, looked it up after I posted. Don't think I ever heard of him.

I see he is part of Joe West's crew, though. So maybe Ol' Joe rubbed off on him.

Yes -- which they felt was a move to accelerate their climb into contention. Tommy Milone and Brad Peacock were the future (although Milone has matured pretty quickly in Oakland).

Sam must have had 1) money on the Astros or 2) an early dinner reservation at the buffet. Either way, Greinke got royally screwed... and even the Astros' TV crew said something.

Hank, Sam Holbrook is a royal embarrassment to MLB umpiring. He's been around over a decade. Too long, if you ask me.

And Peacock has been awful in Triple-A with a 7.00 ERA in 17 starts.

Never would have seen that coming, Della. He was breathtaking in AA last season.

And Grienke gets a four pitch loss.
