I would say his resume is halfway there, but there is no reason to think he won't be HOF someday barring injury.

When he is eligible, I am guessing there will be a simple metric like quality/superior/dominant start that will replace wins. But if it is wins, 235-250 wins should be enough for him.

Problem on that play wasn't the umpire, but defensive ineptitude from the Dodgers. The Padres scored the winning run on Sunday with the help of a wild throw as well. As much as they've been pining away for the return of Kemp and Ethier, if they can't play catch, it could be a long summer.

  3. That was the last rumor . . . taillon and marte, plus taking on a lot of cash for Upton. It's possible someone else has to be a part of the deal as well. Marte had a pretty good spring training and many want to see him in the big leagues now, but with cutch and upton in the outfield, it gets a bit crowded. Plus, marte was pulled from the lineup on Sunday so maybe they are closer than we think. I just don't see another shortstop, their immediate need, worth selling the farm for like they would for upton. It they can get him, though, and have to part with two of those names, I think it's worth it at this point, and necessary to keep up with Cincinnati. And it would be the only way, in my opinion, to make an impact in the playoffs, if they can get there barring another late-season collapse.

I think they would have to consider Taillon and Marte, but cash too? No way.

Chone Figgins is bad at cheating, too, per Deadspin:

  6. By cash I meant picking up a large part of his contract

  7. How the umpire doesn't see that and award the dp is beyond me. To be honest, I'm shocked more second basemen and shortstops don't react more aggressively with how some of them are taken out on double plays. Some of it is downright dangerous.

My bad. Not sure what I was thinking there. I wouldn't be surprised if the Diamondbacks expected the Pirates to pay all of Upton's salary.

Taillon and Marte is getting into the ballpark, but I'd still expect Upton to fetch more.

I don't know how much more they are going to get. Every time Upton seems to be putting it all together, he stumbles, as he did much of the first half of this season. Throw in rumors that the manager doesn't like him and two elite prospects might be enough to get it done.

The Pirates would likely have to dangle Taillon (who has really struggled of late), Marte and another lower-level, high ceiling prospect like Alen Hanson or Gregory Polanco to get a deal with Upton done.

If I'm Neal Huntington, I'd pull the trigger in a heartbeat. It's incredibly rare to see a player with the combination of team control/upside/proven MLB production like Upton even being talked about as a trade target. And the last of that ilk to be dealt is probably Miguel Cabrera, and look at how that turned out for the Marlins.

The only concerning things about Upton have nothing to do with character issues. You just wonder if the shoulder injury is worse than Arizona is letting on or how his numbers translate outside of Chase Field (the splits are pretty drastic).

As Keith Law pointed out, the fact that Appel didn't sign makes it that much less likely the Pirates would be willing to consider trading Taillon at the deadline.
