Sounds like the Diamondbacks were upset that the Pirates wouldn't part with Cole or Taillon. Shrugs.

I understand the defensive issue with Butler, but he is a damn good hitter and he is only 26 years old. He is also under contract through 2014 with a team option for 2015. I don't think you let concerns about finding Casey McGehee playing time get in the way of acquiring a bat like that. The Pirates are contending and they desperately need offense.

If anything, I'm surprised that the Royals might be willing to trade him. I would have no problem at all with the Pirates trading Marte for Butler, but I think people are overrating Marte anyway.

And he has the power of Danny Espinosa backing him up. Espinosa hit his ninth home run and singled so far today, bringing his average up to .256. I know they don't have to choose between Espinosa and Lombardozzi at this point with both in the lineup every day, but it sure seems like they made the right call being patient with Espinosa when he stunk the place up early on. By the way, Lombardozzi's average continues to drop and is down to .261 now.

Espinosa with another "FU Sonner" as that one went out.

LaRoche just hit one to Boston, his second long one in two days. I suspect they'll exercise the option on him for next year.

I'll take it. So glad to see him turn it around, and wow, is he really turning it around from the left side. Geez. They give him a cortisone shot, too?

    Strassy through 7 with 4H, 1R, 11K, 0BB.

@MarkZuckerman #Nats rotation last 5 games: 1.32 ERA, 22 H in 34 IP. And it all started with ... John Lannan.

    Wow.

Not sure what "value" means in this context. He's still tons better than Gordon for getting the Dodgers through this September. If it's about his contract, it's too early to tell what the new ownership group's outlook is, but they definitely have the financial means to join the Steinbrenner/Ilitch/Moreno group and decide their budget is whatever they want it to be. So cost efficiency only matters as much as they arbitrarily decide it needs to matter.

Atlanta's Tommy Hanson has walked 7 and allowed 7 SBs through 5 innings, yet leads 5-1 over the Firesale Fish.

Stupid Leon taking a walk and putting an end to Strassy's day. Now, SMH-Rod is in and I suddenly don't feel so good about a 5-1 lead in the 8th.

If SMH-Rod is still on the roster tomorrow, something's wrong.
