I hope Chen got it all out of his system in one bad inning last night. Sheesh. Turned on the O's-Royals, and like seven pitches later it was 4-0. They just sat on his fastball and crushed it. As Palmer noted, he couldn't even get to his secondary stuff because they were teeing off on the fastball. Shake it off and get after it tonight, I suppose.

Right. No one's saying Rizzo is untouchable.

And Lombardozzi hasn't been a waste. Not even close. Ankiel? Eh. Not really. DeRosa? Sure.

Lombardozzi's slash line is 261/310/339. That's fucking awful. And he has no speed. On the plus side, he gives you mediocre defense at 19 positions, so I guess he has that going for him. Look, I realize he's 23, and every team could use the versatility he brings, but under no circumstances should he get 300 at-bats.

And Ankiel's been almost as bad (228/282/411). At least Rizzo came to his senses on that one.

Disagree. On Lombo. I'm ok with dumping Ankiel.

Lombo is a solid, versatile reserve forced into more action than you'd like by injuries. I don't think anyone is claiming he's a long-term answer anywhere. They started giving the LF time to Tyler Moore, who at least has some pop. Then Desmond went down. They wanted to get Scutaro, so I'm led to believe, and move Espinosa back to second. But that didn't work out. So Lombo gets more every day time. As noted, circumstances and not part of any long-term plan. Not ideal but it has hardly killed them.

They also came to their senses and realized if you were choosing between Bernadina and Ankiel as an extra outfielder, there really wasn't a choice to be made.

In the new, pitcher-friendly MLB, a .650 OPS from your all-around backup isn't really that bad.

He's a quality bench guy. Period. Can play a lot of positions (though I could run on him when he's in LF) and won't kill you. Not an everyday player.

Agreed. I've made fun of people who argued that he should be taking Espinosa's job when the latter started the season like crap, but Lombardozzi has been useful and they had to use him more than expected due because they long stretches without Morse, Werth and Desmond.

Teams need a guy like Lombo. He's been on the field for plenty more winning games than losing ones, at every level. It shows. He plays the game right. And again, that means a LOT more to me than numbers.

Good lord. The David Eckstein Argument rears its ugly head. As if the choice is binary, between scrappy scrappers who Play The Game The Right Way, and lazy loafers who tend to run to third instead of first.

I acknowledged the value in Lombardozzi's versatility. He's a perfectly cromulent bench guy, who still has no business getting 300 at-bats. And at least Eckstein and Nick Punto, who would be good comparisons as bench players, had something resembling speed.

I guess being on the teams that win more than they lose may have something to do with having damn good teammates to make up for his deficiencies.

Two of the more likely dissenters. Yeah, I think I'll stand by what I said.
