If the Angels do make the playoffs, Trout and Pujols should be co-MVPs.

But that bullpen is going to be the death of them.

John Lannan is 2-0. But I still don't know how Davey Johnson trusts Mike Gonzalez in the bullpen. I'd rather give Armando Benitez, even today, the ball instead of him.

Gonzalez scares the shit out of me. On a scale from 1 to HRod, he comes in at a solid 7.

If Lannan doesn't throw another inning, he deserves a full playoff share if there are shares to be had. He won the biggest "must" game the Nats have had. They blew a 9-0 lead and then got shut out in the day portion of a doubleheader. Now the Braves are within 1 1/2 games. If they lose the night game, the Braves can sweep and leave town with the lead. Lannan gave up two in the first and then nothing. Nats rolled the next day and they're like 20-5 or something ridiculous since. They lose that game, they could be headed for disaster. They didn't. He earned his $5 million salary in one night.

Just checked: 19-5 since the first game of that doubleheader.

I wouldn't trust Gonzalez to hold a gallon of milk for me, much less try to help put the lid on it. I'd be leery of him even mopping up a spill.

As a Yankee fan, I had the pleasure of watching Benitez repeatedly blow leads for not one, but two rival teams.

Loved that fucking guy. Million dollar arm, five cent brain.

Lannan's one of very few guys who have blown through here and left with the reputation of being a dick.

But yes, he did come up huge in that game. I remember it well.

Oh, he earned his money. But I still wouldn't trust him in the actual playoffs. Not that he'd be needed -- hopefully -- but still. Maybe in Game 4 with a 3-0 lead. Maybe.

"Going to be ..."? It already is. Don't know if they would have come back from one run down in the ninth last night against the Indians, but the three runs given up by Takahashi and Isringhausen (one on a bases-loaded walk and the other on a wild pitch) killed any chance they had.

The Angels current slump began with the Aug. 1 loss at Texas when Scioscia didn't pinch run with Bourjos for Morales in the ninth inning. They were 99 percent sure to win win that game with ANYBODY but Morales was running.
Last night, Scioscia didn't pinch hit for Iannetta in the seventh or ninth with runners on base. Iannetta struck out looking both times, after grounding into a double play with runners on in his previous at-bat. Iannetta hasn't done shit since he came off the DL. Yes, they were suddenly four runs down in the bottom of the ninth, but the first two batters got hits. Then Aybar struck out. Wells, Izturis and Bourjos were all available to pinch hit for Iannetta and Bobby Wilson was still available to catch. But Iannetta struck out looking, then Trout whiffed.
I haven't read any game stories yet to see if anyone asked Scioscia why he didn't bat for Iannetta.
The reason he gave for not pinch running for Morales in Texas was utter bullshit -- didn't want to gut the middle of the lineup in case the game went into extra innings.
