Here's SI.com's Joe Lemire, terrible poker player, very good baseball writer. One man's opinion, but one I trust. And agree with. Bad for Melky. Good for MLB.

Overall, I see what you are getting at. No doubt MLB needed this to stick, though even there was a problem with the process again this time. It got out before MLB was ready to announce the ban.

But that still doesn't change the fact that people are talking about steroids in baseball again and complaining about tainted games and accomplishments when the story of the day should have been something positive, Hernandez's perfect game. Obviously, we can talk about both, but I still think the game is better off the less this topic comes up.

Tim Keown with a pretty scathing column on Melky:

Sure, the game is better when the topic doesn't come up. But it's not going to go away overnight. It's getting better. More players are getting caught. That's the more important issue here, I think.

If people look at this Cabrera thing and think, "Whoa. MLB really has a problem here. That makes it look really bad.", then they're looking at it the wrong way.

I agree with Ryan. The NFL has routinized its drug policies to the point where suspensions are treated as part of the game by fans, just like knee injuries. All baseball can do is try to do the same. There's an almost infinite difference between three-five players failing drug tests each year and the PED culture of the sport in the '90s.

  6. Nope. End of the bench guy. Stop giving him ABs. Regression.

Aaron Cook took a no-hitter into the sixth at Camden Yards last night. Baltimore then scores five in the bottom of the sixth and holds on for the win. One-hundred and 17 games into this thing and the Orioles hold the AL Wild Card lead. Pinch me.

Man. It's going to be hard watching Cosmo's disappointment in a few weeks. :)

It's all gravy now, my friend. It's August 16 and I'm still invested. That's really all I asked for this season. I love the core of this team and for the first time in years I actually believe in the future ... gotta sign some pitching though.

I'll be glad to jump on the Nats bandwagon. I've kind of always viewed them the way I view the Ravens as a Skins fan. They're just there.

Watched the last inning of the perfect game when they switched to it on ESPN. Just a great job of pitching by Hernandez. Even when you know what's coming, you can't hit it.

You may be right about that last part, but I do think there are far too many people looking at it exactly that way.

I think we overestimate the amount fans really care about steroids. Most people will treat it like he is on the DL and move on. The dummy got caught.
