Yes, that's what puts you in position for a pennant run. A starter with 6-10 record and 4.22 ERA.

I'd be more concerned with the Rays right now, Manky, Jr.

A 4.22 ERA is pretty respectable for a middle-of-the-rotation starter, no?

Plus, he would be a huge upgrade over some of the bums they keep trotting out there like Hunter and Arrieta.

It's depth right now. They gave up nothing to get him, except a guy owed $4m next year for pitching in the 7th inning when the team is losing. Hard to see the downside of getting Saunders. And if he sucks, you just non-tender him and move on.

Can we dismiss Lindstrom that easily, FH? He's been pretty darn effective for a bullpen that's been perhaps the best in baseball this year.

BTW ... familiar name on that cbssports report for us old-timers. :)

Sure, he has been. But he's behind Jim Johnson, Pedro Strop, and Darren O'Day just among righties. And Troy Patton and now Brian Matusz among lefties.

And while Arrieta was pretty abysmal as a starter this year, a lot of people have said he profiles best as a reliever anyway. So if you think Arrieta can do the same thing Lindstrom can, without having to pick up a $4m option next year, AND you get another guy who has a chance to contribute as a starter, then you do it.

Lindstrom has been good, but he's still, at best, the number 5 reliever in the bullpen. He's clearly a reason why the pen has been so good, but that also still makes him expendable, and means you don't have Tommy Hunter giving up homers.

Perhaps Saunders is an upgrade over the back end of the O's rotation, because their 4-5 starters have been pretty miserable at times this year.

That's how I'm looking at it. Low risk, but high reward.

So apparently Hawk Harrelson spent much of last night's broadcast badmouthing the umpires -- shocking, I know.

There were repeated "I," "We," and "Us" references -- shocking, I know. Not that that has anything to do with anything. I just find it annoying. Most of the hubbub seems to focus on him calling out the umpires for what he said were bad calls.

He likely will get another talking-to from Selig. But does MLB have any real recourse here?

I thankfully had it on mute, which is normally how I watch these days. That's half to do with Hawk, and half to do escaping from the noise of my barking dog and chatty 3-year-old.

Appropos of nothing, yesterday on the radio pregame, the host Chris Rongey claimed that the Sox bullpen is costing Jake Peavy "money in the free agent market" by blowing his wins.

I know we have some win loyalists here, but that is an utterly preposterous statement for a supposed expert to make in 2012. If a GM spends a millisecond looking at a win-loss record, or letting Philip Humber and Addison Reed's performances after Peavy goes seven strong color his opinion on Peavy, then he should be an ex-GM.

    What nonsense.

Watched Strop pitch for first time the other night. That guy has nasty stuff.
