Did not see it on TV, but heard the Mariners radio guys over the course of this afternoon's rain-plagued game in Chicago.

They were shocked the seventh inning was played at all, and almost got all Hawk Harrelson about the umps pausing the game for six minutes to let the ground crew fix puddles on the infield.

Immediately after the delay — with the players never leaving the field amid a downpour — Kevin Millwood gives up a two-out, two-run homer. White Sox up 4-3. One bullpen move and two batters later, the game is called with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Sox a sweep.

I'm a Sox fan in Mariners country, so I love the result, but the way the final inning played out sounds fishy to me. Just wondering if anyone else hung through the rain delays and saw the finish.

P.S. -- to his credit, M's manager Eric Wedge refused to be baited into blaming the weather or umps for the loss. He's no Hawk. ;)

During Jeter's career, Barry Larkin, ARod, Tejada, and Rollins have all won MVPs. None of those players measure up to the Captain. You can say Trout is having the better year (although he continues to fade) but there is no way he gets it over Jeter. He is due.

It's not a lifetime achievement award.

I did, and I wonder if there was some thought that the rain was going to miss them or just pass through quickly. I say that because when I flipped over to the Cubs, six or seven miles north, they were still playing. Not a drop falling at Wrigley.

It's funny because Hawk Harrelson was griping early on that they were playing the game at all, or at least hinting that, because they had rained out Baltimore, the White Sox next opponent, and I think he was thinking that this shifted the advantage in that series to the Orioles, because they'd be rested while the Sox would have to play into the evening. Steve Stone noted that the Blue Jays and Orioles are division foes, and that game would be easier to make up.

I hope that the long early delay didn't mess with Gavin Floyd's elbow. He left after two innings with ominous "discomfort." Not sure if he warmed up early and had to come back.

He may not be batting .350 this month, but he's not "fading." He's batting around .290 in August with six home runs and 10 stolen bases.

You and shotglass make excellent points, but they are wasted on Manky's trolling.

About time the National League started feeling the same pain the AL has felt for 109 years.

What the heck does that mean? "He's due"????

He's either earned the award this year, or he hasn't.

Put them side by side, and Trout has had the better season. April-to-October is all that matters for the MVP. Anything anyone has done in previous seasons has no impact on this year's awards.

Manky is trolling. He constantly makes the same idiotic argument. Somebody (often me) explains how the MVP works to him. He ignores it an continues to verbally service his beloved Jeter.

If all things were equal, I could absolutely see some writers voting for Jeter over a much younger player, in order to reward him for his career.

So, the basic premise of Manky's point is not unrealistic.

The problem is with the idea that Jeter's season is equal to the other competitors for the award.

You're right, and I know better.

I'll say this for Manky: He's a very good troll.
