He probably has a decent chance to make a run at the all-time career HR record. Obviously, he'd need to stay healthy for about 10 more years. But he's hit 312 in 10 years and hit 30 or more in a season in eight of the 10 years (one year he hit 26 with Florida and the other had just 12 in his rookie season).

Except the Yankees don't have a cap to deal with, so they can spend their way out of trouble much faster than those 49ers did.

And spare me the bit about what my favorite team does. You are every bit as biased on this topic as I am. You're trying to stand up for baseball.

And you are vastly overstating the impact of financial advantage in the NFL. Yes, you can sneak around the cap more if you have the money to spend, but you still have to deal with a cap and floor and much larger rosters. There are limits on both ends and eventually those bills come due if you play those games.

Regarding the spending of small markets, let's use your numbers. Say the Athletics spend all $40 million. Their payroll would STILL be significantly smaller than the Yankees. So yes, you are asking them to spend in the red that year if they are going to match the big boys in spending.

Your point about when an owner bought in would make sense if I cared about the owners being happy. I don't. I'm just saying it's not fair to ask them to spend more each year than they make (though you do raise an interesting point in franchise value).

I'm talking about the team having an even chance to succeed on the field and the fans belief that their team has a fair shot. If you think those are anywhere close to equal in MLB and the NFL, you're kidding yourself.

Chris Perez is kinda cranky for a new dad.

Be that as it may, oop, my initial point carries the day: You thought luxury tax and revenue sharing were one and the same and didn't know revenue sharing actually existed until I pointed it out to you many months ago, as the minutes of our conversation make clear. I am glad to be of assistance. Please let me know if I can aid your understanding of the complex sports world on other matters in the future.

    Sincerely,
    LTL

Adam Jones just went yard to give the Orioles a 7-6 lead in the 8th.

Translation: You got your ass kicked on the overall point, so you are trying to play up that false gotcha moment rather than admit it. It is now clear to me that even you don't buy the flawed interpretation of that conversation that you have been selling all this time. It is just a dodge you use to avoid admitting that I'm right on the overall point.

Thank you for making that clear to us all.
    Sincerely.

P.S. I went back and looked. That was NOT your initial point. Perhaps you should try to keep your own posts straight next time. Your initial point was that the very small sample size of playoff teams in 2012, which is a long way from being settled at this point anyway, was somehow a major blow in the ongoing debate around here. Again, that is the equivalent of basing a global warming argument on today's weather and I think even you realize that, which is why you shifted the discussion.

Ryan, trying to change the subject doesn't work with them. Been tried many times.

But they are a nice diversion from the back and forth of 2-3 people who's argument has been lost and changed, they don't even know what they're arguing about anymore.

Nah, I just thought this year was a pretty good example that money can't buy you love in MLB. Last year and the year before were excellent examples too, truth be told. But now I have reached the point where it's not worth even arguing anymore. I think I've finally realized your whole raison d'etre is to bemoan what happened to the Pirates in 1992, something others have realized long before now. So I think I'm finally cured of my need to debate oop. I remain satisfied that I have contributed to humanity by making you aware of the existence of MLB's revenue sharing program.

    Good day.

I didn't realize Brandon McCarthy's injury last night was this serious. Sounds like it is still a scary situation even after the surgery.

You know you lost, so you keep running back to some self-proclaimed victory that didn't happen. I now realize that is why you keep digging it up. It is a common tactic of a beaten man. You are losing the overall argument, so you back down into some smaller point and argue it to death. Only in this case, even you realize that the smaller point is bullshit, too.

But if you really are done, you finally did make a contribution by not dragging out your beating any longer and we all thank you for that.

    Good night.
