Isn't Brett Jackson supposedly an elite-level fielder and baserunner? A guy who walks, fields, runs and has some power has a place in the majors.

Elite is way overstating it. He's above-average in CF and above-average running, but he's not elite at either.

If you strike out in 40% of your plate appearances, nobody is good enough to make it up for it in the other 60% + defense.

Sure, but if you can cut that to 30%, you can find yourself a serviceable backup, at least. Also, Dick Whitman, did you leave Starlin Castro off your list intentionally? I assume he's still the centerpiece, with Anthony Rizzo.

And Welington Castillo has the potential to be a good catcher, right?

If he can get it down to 30%, he can definitely be a productive MLB starter. He'd basically be a slightly better version of Drew Stubbs.

I just don't think he can. If you K 34% of the time at AAA, major league pitchers will eat you alive.

They have made a few creative hires in the front office.
The team is now being run by former baseball bloggers.
It's going to take a while but they appear to have a clue.

According to the A's trainer, Brandon McCarthy is still in a "life-threatening" situation, though they are "cautiously optimistic."

    Really hoping he pulls through.

Very scary stuff. Not sure if this story is getting enough attention.

Here's the video of him getting hit from YouTube.

Has the Nationals' third base coach always been such an asshole?

I know quite a bit about the complications and problems caused by "bleeding in the brain."

Even though McCarthy walked off the field, when you have a brain bleed, there's nowhere for that blood to go, so it puts pressure on your brain and can cause loss of motor skills -- or vital functions.

He's not out of the wood yet. Hopefully the surgery stopped the hemorrhage and he can begin recovering.

Meanwhile, Braves post their third straight shutout...for the first time since their golden era (Sept. 2002).

    EDIT:

While researching the Braves' record for 2002, I ran across this nugget, that may be of interest only to me: The Mariners finished third in the AL West, 10 games behind the ballyhooed Moneyball A's and 6 behind the Rally Monkey Halos, and obviously didn't make the playoffs...but they finished 93-69 for a winning percentage of .574.

  12. Hi all. Long long time lurker, finally a first time poster. Really happy I finally made an account here.

Anyway, the Yankees finally played Yankees baseball. It was nice to see downtrodden guys like Russell Martin and Steve Pearce contribute while Hughes had a decent bounce back start. Hopefully this was the beginning of pulling themselves out of this prolonged slump they've been in.
