I wasn't there - wish I had been, looked like a nice scene on TV. But the current system? Unless the Nats hold on and win the division (which means Nats fans should root for the Phils this weekend), the playoff "run" could last one game.

Who thought that was a good idea? The Astros can win ONE game! Wasn't there some sort of alternative they could have come up with on that?

I told my son the Braves fan if his team is in the one-game shootout and doesn't start Kris Medlen, someone ought to be hung. He's still holding out for Tim Hudson.

Your son the Braves fan is crazy.

Yeah, dig that. But sometimes you have to swallow hard.

My son is a VT grad, so UVA is not his favorite opponent. A few years ago, can't remember the situation, but VT needed some help and UVA was the team that could provide that. You realize, I told him, you need to root for UVA this weekend as it actually would help VT? Some things, he said, just cannot be done.

If the Nats can split with the Brewers and the Phillies can somehow take 2-3 from the Braves, that would get the magic number to four going into the final 10 days.

Fredi Gonzalez has publicly said it will be either Medlen or Hudson, but to me it's a no-brainer. It's gotta be Medlen.

Of course, Fredi Gonzalez has no brain ...

I was watching that thing last night they're doing - the inside look? What the hell is it called? Anyway, they're doing Braves-Nats from last weekend. Nats own the Braves all year and they pick the weekend the Braves sweep!?!? But I digress. Chipper and Bo Porter are miked up and Chipper says as Medlen warms up that he has "Maddux-like stuff," or words to that effect.

At some point it isn't a fluke. What's his streak now, 21 starts?

Yep. I've watched him several times this year, and he's not at all over-powering. But like Maddux, his pitches move at the last millisecond and thus no one ever seems to hit the ball really hard.

I prefer this to the old system. This at least gives the division winners more of an advantage than they had before. The two wildcard teams will have to burn one of their best starters to advance

I guess it depends on what you mean by "fluke." He's been both really good and had some positive variance that he probably can't sustain. But it's not like anybody expects him to have a career 1.51 ERA.

Saw the show where they did Yankees-Orioles. An interesting look at things.

But the winner gets the first two games at home. And if you're good enough to get that far, your second pitcher is probably pretty good, too.

I have no idea what positive variance means and I don't expect him to have a career 1.51 ERA. My point is he's clearly legit - after 21 or whatever it is now starts without his team losing, maybe you sit up and take notice of a guy who hasn't had much fanfare.

When the Padres were hot, he beat them twice. When the Nats took the first two here last month, he shoved it up their asses in a game the Braves HAD to have. My son: He's due to get lit up. Me: This isn't 2-3 games. This is a pretty good stretch.

He'll win that one-gamer if the Braves start him. I'm willing to bet on that.
