The Yankees are paying him $2.5 million more than his option but they could be saving much, much more in the long run. The average annual value (AAV) of his previous contract was $14 million, including the 2014 option. By agreeing to a new contract, the previous AAV gets tossed. So his salary for 2013 will be $12 million vs. $14 million relative to the luxury tax threshold.

The trolling worked, but not on the person I was aiming for.

Seems that might not be the case, which makes it kind of dumb deal ...

I'll wait for the dust to settle on this one. Apparently, this deal being treated as an extension of his current multi-year. However, because there were deferred money and bonuses considerations, the AAV figure for 2014 will still be close to $13 million. So it's basically a wash.

Why is it a dumb deal?

Have you considered that Jeter might have elected to sign a team-friendly contract to help the Yankees afford to re-sign Cano?

There is apparently a rumor that Mariano Rivera has been talking to Cashman about coming back for one more season. I doubt it will happen but the Yankees will be back in the playoffs again next year and it would be great to send him off with another ring.

He has also talked about signing with a NL team so he can tour some of the ballparks he didn't visit this season. I could see the Dodgers signing him.

He could sign in the Japanese Central League and start touring those ballparks too.

Mo deserves every accolade he received last season. He is the greatest pitcher in MLB history on a per-inning basis. We will never see another like him.
