“@MLB: The @Twins announce they will transition Joe Mauer from catcher to first base in 2014.”

Yankees have hardly any prospects to trade.

A very large percentage of Yankees fans are so used to looking at much of MLB as their favorite team's minor league system that they don't think of such things.

The concussion late this season finally forced their hand. As much as they may miss his glove behind the plate, they need his bat in the lineup and now they no longer face the issue of where to put Morneau.

I am curious to see what Mauer can do as a hitter now that he can play more often and he won't be dealing with the wear and tear of catching.

The Yankees will reaquire and then retrade Austin Jackson, Jose Tabata and Jesus Montero and the clone of Dan Pasqua

All 13 pending free agents have declined the one-year, $14.1 million qualifying offer, which means their teams will get a draft pick if they sign elsewhere.

The players are Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Napoli, Stephen Drew, Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, Hiroki Kurodo, Brian McCann, Shin-Soo Choo, Ubaldo Jimenez, Ervin Santana, Carlos Beltran, Kendrys Morales and Nelson Cruz.

In two years of the new system, all 22 eligible players have declined the qualifying offer.

I get why they did it (to get the compensatory draft pick), but I'm surprised at some of these qualifying offers given, in particular Drew, Choo, Jimenez, Morales and Cruz.

I guess this counts as the first major free-agent signing. Marlon Byrd to the Phillies on a 2-year deal:

Cardinals have pitching to spare and an offensive black hole at SS. That's a move that helps both sides.

Before Oscar Taveras got hurt, Taveras for Profar straight up would have been a perfect fit for both teams.
