They've played the Stagg Bowl on Friday for at least the last three years. Why? I have no idea.

I imagine it's because they've almost got the day to themselves, with just an FCS semi as the only other game, rather than getting lost amid all the other games (four bowls, D-2 final, FCS semi, beaucoups hoops) on Saturday.

Not that anyone outside of the participating schools is going to notice one way or another.

I don't know why it is this way, but six of the first 11 bowls are west of Texas. And then all you have is the Holiday, Fiesta and Rose.

Wazz-ColoSt is looking like a passing league game.

Can someone please tell the announcers of the Vegas Bowl that there are other gambling metaphors than just craps?

It's that or I'm starting a "they're rolling the dice" drinking game

It's tempting to buy into the theory that things really don't get intriguing until the Liberty Bowl. Still, some of these other contests before and after that game in Memphis have story lines and athletes worth following.

When I was a kid, bowl games were a big deal. I watched almost every one most years. Most were on OTA stations, either networks or syndicated by Mizlou. Of course, there were only 12-18 games back then.

These days I only watch if I have a particular interest in one of the teams. A couple of 7-5 teams on which I can't name a single player doesn't interest me and makes me less enthusiastic about the better ones. Sort of like eating too many appetizers.

Then there's the Mountain West with the bulk of its bowl games today, including Fresno State laying a egg so far on broadc.ast TV

Forget the meaningless bowl games between 7-5 teams. There was a heck of a FCS semifinal today between Towson and Eastern Washington (on the red field!).

Towson went up 21-0 by early in the second quarter. Eastern Washington scored a TD, and then got stopped on the 1-yard line on the final play before halftime.

In the second half, Eastern Washington scored 24 unanswered points to go up 31-21. But Towson came back themselves with their backup QB and scored twice, including the winning TD with 17 seconds left.

So now Towson faces unbeaten North Dakota St. for the title in two weeks.

Wazzu inexplicably wanting to give this game to the Rams. Wow.

Really, this is a cheese game. Doesn't mean jack crap. But for the first day of winter with nothing else on, it's high entertainment.

    Looking at overtime.
