Was a little surprised that USC took him back as an assistant. Thought they were try to purge ties to the Carroll years. And then they hire Kiffin and Orgeron again?

So who gets the best of wishes in their future endeavors first in Virginia -- Mike London or Mickey Matthews? Or does Latrell Scott beat them both?

With the NCAA hammering they knew was coming, they couldn't find anyone else worth a damn to take the job.

Probably goofy, but heard the suggestion (possibly during the broadcast yesterday?) of Orgeron to Illinois. Sounds pretty off the wall, but it would be a hoot. Be interesting to see what he could do with recruiting Chicago & St Louis.

The last SEC washout they hired did OK ... for a while.

USC confirms that Del Rio interviewed during the Broncos' bye week:

I find it interesting that most people, and I'm guilty of it too a lot of the time, don't ever consider the possibility that a coach can get better.

They are in a profession that's all about helping player improve and maximize their abilities and identifying problems and fixing them. Yet for some reason we all have a hard time believing that a guy such as Orgeron with a few years to reflect could really be a better head coach than he was on his first try.

Pete Carroll is a prime example of that.

Denny Green's 7-37 record in the Big Ten also was hard to ignore, yet he managed to get three more jobs (two in the NFL) after that.

He was also at Northwestern when the Wildcats were looking to drop to the Ivy League or even Division III. Green got a pass at NU because they were SO far behind the other conference schools at that period. Northwestern was lousy before Green and they were lousy after Green for another dozen years.

Ole Miss was going to bowls under David Cutcliffe before Ed Orgeron arrived. Houston Nutt went 9-4 the year after Orgeron was fired. That's a big difference. Ole Miss was decent before and after Orgeron's three years.

Has Orgeron improved as a head coach? Perhaps - at least that's the narrative being put out right now and I do think he's merited another long shot at a HC position with a BCS school.

You just have to be careful with an interim coach situation with a premiere job. Luke Fickell made it easy for Ohio State to go get Urban Meyer. Steve Lavin made it difficult for UCLA basketball because he actually won a few games.

Ed O would be great at a school looking for an identity, like a NC State or Kansas an Iowa. Somewhere with no expectations to live up to or image it is seeking to uphold.

What, exactly, did Orgeron do or not do that made him a flop at Ole Miss? Don't follow the SEC that closely, so not all in on what went down there.
