Kevin Sumlin...... why on earth would he leave Texas A&M for USC?

He's built a good program that has shown it can step up and compete in the SEC. He has a great recruiting base with lots of kids within 200 miles of the campus. They're regularly on TV. They have excellent facilities and budget. He's gotten the alums and fan base to accept him, which as an African-American, isn't a given at a place like Texas A&M. He's got a really good deal going on, regardless of whether Johnny Manziel leaves or not.

Some might argue USC could offer more money and/or exposure, but he's got more than enough of both right where he's at with fewer headaches.

Orgeron's Ole Miss staff included one Hugh Freeze. He was Michael Oher's high school coach, which is a major reason why Orgeron gave him a job.

He also hired Dan Werner (OC/QBs) and Art Kehoe (O-line), who had been on Dennis Erickson's Miami staff along with Orgeron. Werner is now offensive coordinator under Freeze.

Orgeron's defensive coordinator was John Thompson, who has coached at most every school in the southeast, with varying levels of success.

He also gave Frank Wilson his first college coaching job. Wilson is considered one of the best recruiters in the country, and is now RBs/recruiting coordinator at LSU.

The coaching staff wasn't the problem under Orgeron. It was the head coach.

I would agree. I think last season's success earned him a little longer leash.

Whoever thought I'd live to see the day when Duke and Minnesota had better records in football than Florida, Miami, Michigan or Texas?

I tend to think Foley wants to keep Muschamp, but if they lose to Florida State and have the first losing record since 1979 and no bowl game, it just might become impossible to keep him. I think the only way you keep him is if you're supremely confident about next season. Last season should have bought him some slack, but the Florida fanbase has been so spoiled since Spurrier arrived that a losing record might be too much for any coach to survive.

Anything can happen, but Florida beating Florida State pushes the outside of the envelope of that phrase.

Florida State has a bowl streak even longer than Florida. I was a teenager the last time one of those teams didn't go to a bowl (except the Charley Pell years when Florida was on probation). This will probably be one of the largest point spreads that series has seen in the last 30 years or so.

That's technically correct, but there are mitigating factors.

FSU's last season without a bowl was 1981. The Seminoles were 6-5 and eligible, but not chosen for a bowl.

Florida missed in 1984, 85, 86 and 90, but was under an NCAA postseason ban all four years. (The Gators were 6-5-1 in 1986 and might not have gone anyway, since there weren't 35 bowl games back then).

In other words, Florida hasn't missed a bowl game in a season it was eligible for one since 1979, when it was 0-10-1.

I guess we'll see whether Gators or Seminoles alums rule the Tallahassee prosecutor's office.

If Florida State dumptrucks Florida, Muschamp is gone.

One big difference between Bill Stewart and Ed Orgeron: Stewart got the gig solely off the bowl victory, whereas Orgeron will have coached the team for most of the season.

One similarity though - they were both replacing coaches who weren't missed by the players.

I think he could survive a loss, but if it was a humiliating loss it might be too much to overcome.
