Richie Rod was much more successful, of course, so that bought him much more leeway in the locker room.

A friend who covers national college football swears that Sumlin is interested in the USC job because he loves the attention that comes with a job like that.

I'll still believe that when it happens. Sumlin can get all the attention he wants going to the NFL.

USC is the equivalent of an NFL job. It's the only game in town.

Yeah, it was interesting to hear that, because I just assumed he wouldn't leave A&M for another college job. I still don't think he'll do it, because I think A&M will match any offer. Sumlin is making just over $3 million a year now, and I'm guessing any serious offer for him would start around $5 million a year. I think only 3-4 guys make that much. I know Saban and Mack Brown make more than that. I'm not sure if Urban Meyer is quite that high. Bob Stoops might be hovering around that number as well.

And all four of those guys have won at least one national title.

If Sumlin if offered the job I can't see him not taking it. The Pac 12 has fast become the "it "
conference despite what SEC fans think.

If by "it," you mean their games are on late at night in 80 percent of the country and they have won one outright national title in the last 40 years (and it was vacated), I guess you're right ...

If Sumlin leaves A&M, it will be because he figures it's not likely to get better in the post-Manziel era. But assuming he can recruit, he's got just as good a chance to win and win big (and make boatloads of money) where he is.

College FB has become to the sport what TV has become to the entertainment industry; it's no longer thought of as secondary to the bigger-budgeted game in town.

Just as Martin Scorcese is willing to direct a TV show every now and then, and just as Breaking Bad was the most-talked about event on a screen this year, so too are college football coaches in prime positions. I'd be willing to bet more people know who coaches Florida State than who coaches the Jaguars and I bet more people in the Bay Area know who coaches Stanford than who coaches the Raiders. The next coach of USC will make more than the coach of the Chargers.

I don't follow A&M recruiting that closely, but from everything I've heard, his recruiting there has been top-notch so far.

I'd be fairly stunned if he left for another college job.

USC trumps A&M any day. And on a forward looking basis, yes The Pac 12 is the it conference. As a group they will get much more national exposure than the SEC schools get outside of Alabama. They also have better basketball which gives them year round exposure.

The SEC just went partners with ESPN on its own network. The money and exposure spigot is not in any danger of drying up below the Mason-Dixon line.

Of course it's never going to dry up but now there is competition.
