A&M has everything USC has except more money, a better location, better recruiting base and an easier path to the national championship game.

You didn't say there was "competition" (which I wouldn't have disputed). You said the Pac-12 is the "it" conference, which it isn't, at least not yet.

That stuff goes in cycles. Two years from now, it'll be something else.

A&M has a terrific recruiting base. Tons of good athletes within a couple of hundred miles of campus. Lots of tradition, good facilities, lots of exposure. Just because it isn't a major metro city itself (Houston is about 90 miles away), doesn't mean it lacks exposure.

USC: Your toughest divisional opponent is ... ? UCLA?

A&M: Maybe it's LSU, maybe Alabama, with Auburn often a pain in the ass and Ole Miss an occasional hemmhroid.

As far as money goes, A&M has as much as any school in American for purposes both academic and athletic.

I suppose there are different ways to look at it. When we were discussing the Tennessee head coaching job last winter, part of the "attraction" was being in the ultra-competitive SEC. I guess some people see that as a plus where others see it as a minus. Of course, A&M could have stayed in the Big XII if playing against the other SEC schools were a drawback.

So I guess what job is better is in the eye of the beholder. Two years ago, Sumlin was head coach at the University of Houston. So maybe there are other coaches at smaller conference schools who could successfully move to a major program as well.

You could have said the same thing about Urban Meyer. Utah wasn't in a BCS conference when Meyer was there and he quickly established himself as one of the top coaches in the country when he was at Florida.

Is Sumlin at that level? Is Sumlin benefiting from having Manziel as his QB? Is he getting too much mileage off the Alabama upset from last year?

I think he's a very good coach. If I was USC, he would seem to be an obvious choice for the job. But it hasn't been determined if he's a top 5 coach. The guys who would be considered top 5 have either won titles or gotten really close.

Sumlin is a star in the making. He handled himself very well during the pre season
Manziel blow up. Pretty much put things to rest and went and coached his team.

Loved his offense in Houston. Love it now at A&M. Another disciple from
    the Mike Leech tree.

Agreed. I think he would do very well at USC.

It will be interesting to see if another SEC coach will win a national title as long as Saban is at Alabama.

It's actually the Hal Mumme tree, which begat current FBS head coaches Leach, Sumlin, Art Briles, Sonny Dykes, Ruffin McNeill, Greg McMackin, Kliff Kingsbury and Dana Holgorsen.

Amazing how so many coaches came from that complete asshole.
