Never is a long time, but I would have no problem with the statement that Vandy will never win the SEC East. It's not realistic. It's a near miracle that they're going to bowls in back to back years.

And that the athletic program is one of the richest in the country.

Still … most of them had been doormats in BCS conferences. Now, none of them are. That's not a complete coincidence.

Duke might not experience this again anytime soon, similar to Wake Forest a few years ago. But that they're able to experience this for even one year is more of a shot than they had 10-20 years ago. Progress, even in baby steps ...

Stanford had 12 first- or second-team Pac-12 all-stars. Two went to California high schools. Their recruiting is nationwide.

But yes, being in California does help them recruiting against Vandy, Rice, Notre Dame and Northwestern, the only FCS private schools with a comparable academic profile that could be attractive to a smart, good FB player. Wake is a good school, I almost went there, and so are BC and USC. But they aren't Stanford, by a long shot.

Plus Stanford is a national program, the others are not. They have name recognition as great schools but they aren't going all over the country to recruit guys and beating programs in their backyards like Stanford can.

If Orgeron was "outraged" and resigned on the job, this explains exactly why he wasn't hired. Loose cannon. He reacts like Cajun Tony Soprano when he was passed over for running the entire New Jersey syndicate. You have to be a grown up and, behind the scenes, make an exit strategy.

On a far lower level, 20 years ago, I was passed over for a small market weekend sports anchor gig. Tiny market. The guy who got it had a year of experience on me and went to Mizzou. He deserved the job.

Two years later, I'm working at another small station and the main sports anchor gig comes open at Mizzou's station. I apply and beat him out for the job.

Yet how he reacted was incredible.

The guy took ME out for lunch on my first day (I planned to take him out to mend fences), gave me his contact lists, produced my shows for the first week and did everything he could to be a team guy. He stuck around for 5 years doing weekends while me as his boss. We didn't always get along but I always respected that.

Now he's in a Top 10 market making a ton of money and a good character guy all the way through.

THAT is how you handle getting passed over.

True, but at least Maryland did win the ACC in 2001. Not exactly recently, but not too long ago. I have no idea how long it's been since Duke or Vanderbilt won conference titles. Obviously, Duke can change that on Saturday, but I don't think too many people are holding their breaths. :D

That's why Franklin needs to leave or risk becoming one of these guys who gets stuck. He won't win big there - not with the Ole Ball Coach at SC, looks like UT may have gotten it right with Butch Jones, Richt has Georgia in a good place though they were crushed by injuries and it is only a matter of time for Florida.

If Franklin stays too long he will have a mediocre record and he may see the program peak at like 8-4 and then go back to a losing record annually and then he can't leave.

The other guy I fear this happening to is Paul Rhoads at Iowa State. Seems to be a very good coach, he is highly regarded. Has gotten that program to some level or respectability, has some signature wins and all of that stuff but reality is he now has posted 4 losing seasons in 5 years there and at some point will become a guy who can't be hired because his record is so putrid.

He is the kind of guy who should go after the Washington job, or some place where he has a chance to win.

I'm sure Franklin stayed at Vandy because he figured if he kept winning there he could do better than NC State. I'd like to think maybe some of it has to do with the fact you can't trust Debbie Yow as a person and that she's an awful boss and an awful AD, but I don't know that or sure. That's just my perception. She also made Franklin the coach in waiting at Maryland, so maybe his view of her is different. Or maybe he just took it because it's a business and it was a good business decision (plus an extra million in his account). And maybe he saw the way she tried to fire Friedgen the way she did, and wasn't enamored with how it all went down (this was the year before Friedgen got COY and was subsequently fired for it, her attempts to fire Ralph went as well as her several attempts to fire Gary Williams).

But either way, Franklin ended up at Vanderbilt and has done some real good shit. Hell the fucking Commodores beat Florida. Doesn't matter the circumstances. They just did it. Now Franklin is getting mentioned in the same breath as USC and Florida. It may not happen. But that's better than getting mentioned for NC State. And working for anyone is better than working for Debbie Yow.

Yeah but the problem is if he stays too long he could end up with a string of 5-7 seasons and then he becomes far less attractive.

No question. I was talking just in relation to the offer from NC State. Now is a great time for Franklin to bolt.
