Speaking of which, the Mack Brown postgame presser is going to be a complete cluster tomorrow. The high in Waco is forecast to be 30, so it's going to be butt cold. The visiting coach meets the media just outside the locker room, in the concourse, with visiting fans held back by pull-down gates. There's going to be a hundred media folks for Brown, and there's not nearly enough room for all of them. It's just not going to be good.

It's got to be interesting trying to run an athletic department at these lower tier FBS schools. The only reason anyone accepts a job at your school is to be successful enough to leave in a couple of years. If a team performs well, it's essentially a given that the coach is leaving for greener pastures.

A lot of editors at small and mid-size papers can relate.

I interviewed for an assistant SID job at Idaho the summer Dennis Erickson "came home." I understand they had to put on a happy public face, but I thought "I give this guy a year, two tops, depending on who's on the hot seat later this year."

Seeing MTSU's Rick Stockstill being mentioned for Wake Forest and Arkansas State's Bryan Harsin for Boise State.

Man, Arkansas State has to be getting tired of that revolving door after losing Hugh Freeze and Gus Malzahn the last two years.

If they're smart, they leverage themselves as a proving ground for guys who want the really big job. Yeah you're changing every 2-3 years, but you carve out a nice niche.

When you're a school like that, you don't want a guy who's there for 15 years, because that means he isn't good enough to go anywhere else.

It's not football, but the University of Tulsa men's basketball program is a great example of this sentiment...

There are exceptions. Look at how getting rid of Jeff Bower ultimately worked out for Southern Miss.

I don't even pay attention to the contracts anymore. It's pretty much "you're the coach until you have a bad year and we fire you or have a good year and someone else hires you." Maybe the solution is to go 8-4 every year.

According to this story, Wilcox has a $1 million buyout to move within the conference, which may be why he's not headed to USC. I wonder if that's becoming more common for coordinators...

This guy does a really nice job of breaking down candidates. I wish bigger papers had coaching candidates lists that are this detailed.

Damn, that's a hell of a buyout for an assistant.
