Still amazed that Orgeron, who resurrected his career over an 8-week stretch, flushed it down the toilet by stomping out on USC. He cost himself seven figures, easily.

According to a tweet from Dom Izzo, Bohl would not coach the Bison through the rest of the playoffs. I've covered the FCS for a long time, and I can't remember an occasion when a coach left his team midway through the playoffs. Things are lining up nicely for Coastal Carolina, which braved -2 temps and handled the Griz in Missoula yesterday. Bison will still be favored against Coastal, but there's no way this isn't a distraction.

All he had to go was be gracious for the opportunity, hang out for two weeks, help with the transition and he probably could have landed a decent head coaching gig.

Yet this is a display in how Orgeron handles adversity. He bailed. Major red flag for any smart AD. They'll think, "he was 3-21 with Ole Miss and the second he didn't get the USC job, he scurried back to Louisiana in a huff."

Haden could have easily let them all walk the plank at the end of the season with Orgeron wouldn't have even had the chance to go 6-2 with USC.

I remember thinking that the Ed O stomping out story might have been manufactured by SC to make it easier on Sarkisian coming in/ and win over the Ed O fan club - but I figure Orgeron would have denied it by now if it was BS.

I know he rallied the troops at USC for, what was it 6 or 7 games, but let's be honest -- Ed O is a meathead and a bag man recruiter. Anybody that hires him from any school other than perhaps some of those Sun Belt schools that are looking for a name or whatever, is going to have a mess on their hands -- a bad team that has NCAA snooping around when he is fired

Do you think he should have gotten the USC job? I can understand how he might want to get away from coaching altogether for a while. You put your heart and soul into something and then someone else screws you, yeah, it leaves a less-than-pleasant taste. I'm not sure I would have stuck around for the bowl game, either.

Good lord. Have you ever been to Laramie? It's a nice little city, good school, great facilities, better league, affordable housing (but more expensive than you might think), 25 minutes away from the mountains, an hour to Ft. Collins, 2 1/2 hours to Denver, it's closer to a lot of stuff than Fargo is.

Good hire for the Pokes. Brett Smith can run his offense, and Bohl's recruiting base (Minn, Wisc.) won't be put off by a Wyoming winter, which is actually warmer than a Northern Plains winter. Wyo needs defensive help a lot more than offensive help.

Orgeron screwed himself by losing to UCLA by 21 points. In that case, you're still - essentially - on a job interview. Not with USC but with all of the other schools that are looking.

Yeah, I've been to Laramie. It was summertime and quite nice, weather-wise. But the wind almost blew my car off the road. It just felt awfully remote.... and I've lived in some really remote places.

I think it's one of the worst jobs in FBS. Not sure what the facilities or budget are (didn't look anything special when I visited the campus in 2007). Former coach Dana Dimmel, when he left to go to Houston, remarked that he had more recruits with a 10-mile radius than he did in the entire state at Wyoming. Can't even remember the last time they won the conference. (I do remember the Randy Wellniak team in 1988.... can't recall if they've won anything since then.)

Hey, I hope Bohl does well.

I covered a few games in Laramie in the winter... Not fun....

Bohl is coming from North Dakota State. Wyoming is a definite upgrade. Yes, it's cold and windy in the winter, like Ames, Iowa City, Stillwater, etc. Easy job? No. But you can win there.

Laramie and the university have changed a lot in the last six years. There's a new indoor practice facility. The entire stadium has been redone. The MWC is finally stable and better top-to-bottom than the MAC, a very competitive and reputable mid-major conference. The state has a $6 billion surplus, funds higher education well, and has invested in the university.

And if Dana Dimel would have spent half as much time recruiting and coaching as he did going all Rick Pitino at the Alibi, he would have done a much better job.

Remember that the competing comparative in this discussion is Fargo, where people dream of wintering in Laramie.
