I agree Golden did a good job of improving Temple. But Randy Shannon has a 23-15 record his last three years at Miami and gets fired after a 7-5 year. Golden goes 22-15 the next three years and gets Penn State? Why is Golden a materially better coach than Shannon? What am I missing?

Schools always say the hire a guy like Shannon to clean up a program - and even if they do (like Shannon) - they still have to win. Golden gets points for a) being a Penn Stater and b) hanging in for three years when sanctions were looming. Now they aren't in Miami and he's entering year four without a bowl win or an appearance in a big time bowl.

I wonder if Miami might go with Mario Cristobal.

Shannon maybe took too much heat at Miami, because that's not a top-tier job anymore, but the Hurricanes were in a much better position to succeed when Shannon took over than the mess Golden inherited. Miami is behind its rivals in facilities and the mystique of "The U" continues to fade with time. It is lucky it's not in worse shape with NCAA sanctions, thanks only to the fact the NCAA completely bungled the investigation, but that doesn't change the fact Golden had all that hanging over his head as he tried to coach and recruit.

Shannon coached UM to only its second losing season since 1979 and went 16-16 in an ACC that was ripe to be dominated before Jimbo and Dabo showed up. Shutting down the Orange Bowl with an absolute destruction at the hands of Virginia and losing to a South Florida team that went 3-4 in the Big East didn't buy him any goodwill.

The overall records might look the same, but Golden's teams steadily improved each year he was at Miami.

FWIW something called CaneInsider.com put up a story less than 24 hours ago saying Golden spoke to a source inside the Miami Hurricanes' football program and said "I'm not leaving."

Is this even possible? I thought he was a done deal.

It's not that, Lancey, if you're talking about why Penn State wants him.

He's a home boy. That means everything to those folks.

What's kinda funny is that Golden grew up in one of the most affluent towns in New Jersey, where Springsteen, Queen Latifah and others have homes, and went to an expensive Catholic school. I know he's a Paterno guy, but the way he grew up doesn't really scream Central Pa.

    Neither did O'Brien or Paterno.

It seems like you do not know much about Penn State. They've always gotten players
from affluent Jersey towns that attended "expensive " Catholic schools. There are
also expensive Catholic schools in Central Pa.

I'm not talking about appealing to players. But it is a good point that Paterno himself wasn't a typical Central Pennsylvanian.

I still don't see your point. Penn State fan base is a lot wider then Central PA. Golden
is the perfect candidate if you want to please the fan base. He even wears a white
dress shirt and tie on sidelines like Joe used to.

Maybe Matt Millen wants to coach to round out his resume.

I guess my point is that if you asked somebody where Golden was from they'd be as likely to guess Chambersburg, Pa., as Colts Neck, NJ, and those are two towns that could hardly be less alike. We're both putting way too much thought into it.
