Not sure, but when you've got the Sandusky thing not that far in the rear-view mirror, with the Paterno people seemingly always on guard, and the Franco Harrises of the world not willing to move on, even if Franklin's greatest offense in the Vandy situation was that he was coach at the time, one could argue that should be enough to drop him from consideration.

I don't know. A lot of you weren't too right before when you thought O'Brien shouldn't leave New England.

That's pretty harsh, assuming he wasn't involved.

I agree it's harsh, but it's more about Penn State and less about Franklin.

You hire him and you're still going to get fresh questions about this incident, columnists taking potshots (fair or not) on how football still rules all in Happy Valley, how Penn State still hasn't learned anything and has a "football problem" and still doesn't care about sexual abuse, etc.

Is Franklin so far head-and-shoulders above the No. 2 candidate (or whatever number they are down to), where you're better off hiring him and dealing with that crap, or are you better off going another name down the list for a guy who who didn't coach a team that had a rape controversy this year?

Franklin is a great fit for Penn State. Yet it's funny ... a lot of the Penn State grads I talk to are lukewarm at best about the hire.

They are all for Al Golden for some reason.

Also good timing for Franklin. As a huge Vandy fan, I was expecting him to leave this year or next year at the latest. He has presided over unprecedented success at Vanderbilt. This also comes as the SEC East has never been worse. If Florida and Georgia are ever elite again, if Tennessee ever gets back to eight wins, if South Carolina ever gets a decent offense, Vandy will probably be back at 3-9.

Probably because he played for Paterno.

Part of it, Xan. Part of it.

There's just a lot of second-, third-generation fans there. They remember Al Golden being a hustler, a borderline talent who fought for playing time. That resonates with them, I think.

    Joyner's holding a presser at 4:15 p.m. tomorrow.

Huh. I just thought it was because they love tight ends in Happy Valley.

A lot less movement this winter than last.
