The only reason I could see for someone leaving a good Big Ten position to go to the SEC is if the SEC school offered a ton more money. It will just be one headache after another. Not that the Big Ten is easy, by any stretch.

If he brings Charlie Partridge with him as his DC/Florida recruiter and puts together a staff with some SEC experience & Texas recruiting ties this will wind up being a very good hire for Arky.

They'll never challenge Bama as long as Saban is there but he's no worse than Miles from a game management standpoint.

LSU, Florida, Alabama and Auburn have all won national titles recently so it's a safe bet those schools have expectations of winning a national title.

Georgia and Arkansas have been in the top 5 recently, so one would assume that is the case there as well. So has Missouri, but I would definitely not say that anyone at Missouri realistically expects to win a national title.

Texas A&M and Tennessee have that expectation, even though it might not be realistic. Look at the kind of money they're throwing at coaches. They definitely expect to be in the national conversation.

South Carolina will have that expectation as long as Spurrier is there, even though it's probably not realistic either.

That leaves Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Kentucky and Missouri.

Malzahn would be a very good pick at Auburn, IMO. He knows the area and the ins and outs of the school and had some success as an assistant. Wasn't sure why he left unless he was just itching to be a head coach.

But, even so, it just shows that you can go back someplace when the time is right.

Not doubting you at all. But if he takes Wisconsin to 3 straight Rose Bowls and still is hurting for support and respect within the state, then he is making the right move to go elsewhere.

Not easy, but a lot easier. He went for the money, period. He's recruited well in Florida, but I doubt too many of those kids were offered by UF or FSU. He's a good coach, but he has no ties to the south. It just doesn't make sense.

Well, they finished third in the division and made the Big Ten title game by default. That's not his fault. But they did lose five games this year. To his credit, they beat Nebraska.

I think he had support. Like any place there's always going to be people bitching about coaches who don't win national titles. There are a lot of people who think that any year you don't win a national title is a failure.

Arkansas is in the same ballpark as Oklahoma State (and South Carolina, among many others). You may have one year every decade or so when you're a true contender. For that to happen, everything has to break right: schedule, injuries, good senior class, other teams having down years, etc.

But you can't expect to butt heads with LSU, Alabama, Auburn and Texas A&M year-in, year-out and come out ahead. As someone else said, the SEC is top-heavy. Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU and maybe Auburn, Tennessee and Texas A&M have a certain level of expectations that may or may not be reasonable. Everyone else is a notch below that and that can be a really hard place to be unless you have the personality to deal with it.

I would hope one of those places is not Wisconsin, though - at least for 99 percent of the fans. That would be ridiculously delusional.

I'm guessing Dave Doeren is more than a little pissed he took the NC State job.

Money aside, how is Arkansas a better job than Wisconsin? I think you have an easier time winning consistently at Wisconsin.

And, if by some hook or crook you did manage to go undefeated at UW, you'd be in the championship discussion just because of the Big Ten's reputation.

While fanboi possibly, UT has won a MNC and was on tap to play in another (despite the fact UT would have been destroyed just as Nebraska was) within the BCS era. UGA and Tennessee are on par with one another, though. I would be happy with those coaches records at Tennessee. I was happy with Fulmer. Bad times come upon everyone. Especially when the competition is raised. I think Fulmer would have eventually rose to the occasion like Richt has done.

People like Fulmer, Tubbs, etc. should have never been fired.
