Why? NC State doesn't seem hopeless. The timing might stink if he wanted to coach in the Orange Bowl, which sort of underscores yet another flaw in the entire process.

The most interesting thing (as it typically is) will be the aftermath, if it comes out how many other coaches they contacted, how many offers they extended and were rebuffed, and the timetable on Bielema. I assume there will be a slew of FOI requests hitting the Arkansas athletic department ...

I assume this all came together after the Big Ten championship game Saturday night and he (or his agent) weren't dealing with this while Bielema was preparing for Nebraska?

I wonder if he's actually signed anything yet.

Yeah, Fulmer had an excellent run. He was there for a long time. I don't think coaches staying in one place for 10 or more years works as well as it did in the older era (Bryant, Switzer, Paterno, Osborne, Royal, Schemechler, Hayes, etc.).

But Fulmer's run shows that it is possible to win at Tennessee, for sure. It's just going to take the new guy a few years to get his system in place.

It would be funny as hell if he was in discussions with Arky all week prior to the Big 10 title game and they still kicked the ever-loving shit out of Nebraska. Hell, that might be enough to get Pelini fired.

There's no reason to leave other than money. Maybe he's sick of having Barry looking over his shoulder.

With Manziel coming back, it wouldn't surprise me if Texas A&M makes a serious run at a national title next year. Hell, they're a last-second loss to Florida and a few plays against LSU away from being there this year. If they win one, maybe they use the boost in recruiting to elevate themselves to national status. Otherwise, yeah, expecting that every year is a touch on the delusional side.

The biggest hurdle to winning at places like Texas A&M and Arkansas is that they're not LSU and Alabama. I don't mean that from the standpoint of being at a disadvantage in talent, money and recruiting, either.
Assuming LSU and Alabama remain the perennial Top 5 programs they've been recently, they really only need to beat each other most years to get to the SEC championship game and be in the mix for the national title. It gives them room for a slip-up somewhere else along the way. The winner of their game will still be at the front of the line of one-loss BCS contenders.
Texas A&M, Arkansas and any other challengers in that division need to beat BOTH Alabama and LSU, plus not have any other slip-ups. Knocking off one or the other is doable, but beating both is a tall order. When you throw in some of the other solid SEC teams like Florida, South Carolina and Georgia that pop up on the schedule, plus any tough non-conference games you try to sprinkle in, it just turns into a gauntlet that's damn near impossible for any team to run.

So now that Bielema is leaving Wisconsin does that mean Pitt will bring Wanny back?

    Or maybe Wlat?

Yep, it's a very, very tough road. Gotta have a lot of luck along the way. (Like Cam Newton falling into your lap.)

Watching the dominos fall is fun. Not so much when Malzahn takes the Auburn job, but when there is an unexpected opening in Wisconsin.

Is anyone surprised no school has gone after Bill O'Brien (that we know of)?

A good example of why it pays to wait during coaching carousel season. Yesterday, Jones thought his choices were between Colorado and Purdue. One day later a far better option appears out of nowhere.

If he'd made a decision yesterday you'd be hearing a gigantic "D'oh!" from him today.
