Unless there's something out there that is on no one's radar (like Bielema to Arkansas), this could be a very tough sell to Tennessee fans. If they went after Gruden, Gundy, maybe Strong, maybe others, their new coach could be their No. 5 choice (or lower).

Is the ink dry on Les Miles' extension? He could probably get another couple mil out of LSU.

I read the Chryst statement and immediately thought, "Your next Wisconsin coach."

This is a massive longshot, but I could see Bielema doing a Bobby Cremins thing and backing out within the week.

    Would Alvarez take him back?

I don't. This is a money grab, for him and for his assistants.

I think the facts that Bielema seemed such a perfect fit at Wisconsin, and ended up making arguably a lateral move, explains how people missed it. He seemed tailor-made for that job/region - son of a hog farmer, grew up in Illinois, played at Iowa, hand-picked by Alvarez, lots of early success, not the type to attract NFL interest - and it seemed like he might be a rare coach that would stay in the same place a long time, and would have enough capital built up that he wouldn't get fired if he hit a rough patch of two or three years.

And the Arkansas job might have a higher ceiling because of the conference and the proximity to talent - his chance of winning a national title is certainly higher there - but the degree of difficulty in that division is so high that I'm not sure it's really a better job.

As to the Bobby Cremins thing, lots of people in Wisconsin didn't like him all that much to begin with, and after this sudden departure, I have a hard time seeing Alvarez accepting him back.

Bobby Cremins left for his alma mater. Billy Donovan left for the NBA. Urban Meyer left to retire.

Bret Bielema left for a job Barry Alvarez undoubtedly views as equal or worse, and he did it entirely behind Alvarez's back.

Can't blame Gundy, Strong, Chryst, etc. for staying where they are. The grass is NOT always greener on the other side of the fence (see Dan Hawkins, Gary Barnett, etc.) and sometimes you wind up screwing up a good thing chasing a few more dollars.

None of these guys are going to be on food stamps for a while. They'll be OK. They may well like the situations they are in, the people they work with, the schools they coach, etc. If so, good for them.

Because of the schedule, I think it will be much harder to win big at Arkansas. I can envision scenarios where Wisconsin could go 12-0 some year and be in a national title chase. For that to happen at Arkansas, more dominos have to fall in place correctly.

But, again, it's not about a "national" title, anyway. For most schools, that's a pipe dream. You play to win your conference, or, in many cases, just have a winning season. Those are the real goals. Anything else is gravy.

Well, the two most botched coaching searches in recent memory were the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002 and Alabama several years ago.

The Bucs supposedly had Parcells signed. Then he backed out, then they were going to hire Marvin Lewis and then they were going to trade for Mariucci and then they traded for Gruden. It got them a ring.

With Bama, I think RichRod accepted it and backed out, depending on which story you believe. I think they offered it to the USF coach. I think there were a few others in there as well. It was fucking ugly and getting worse by the day. Coaches who are nowhere today were turning down Alabama. Then they got Saban.

Maybe Tennessee would be better off with Fulmer for a year or two while they try to nail down someone good. I think this flirtation with Gruden really screwed them over because it got the fan base excited and other top candidates weren't going to interview at a place only to be turned away if Gruden took the job.
