I would agree that while Texas football has consistently been good to very good, I think the program as a whole definitely underachieves.

I kind of feel like the programs that should be in the top 10 almost every single year are Florida, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas and maybe USC.

That's very true. If Nike went away, Oregon would go back to being a program where the fans would get super excited when they go to the Cotton Bowl. But, I don't think Nike is going anywhere... :D

Beamer made Virginia Tech, but there's no reason the Hokies should fall off the map. Strong facilities, a commitment to paying what it takes for top coaches, dominant program in a large and growing state, strong presence in D.C., Hampton Roads, Richmond and even Greensboro. If they had wanted in the SEC last year, Missouri would never have gotten to change the stationary.

    Phil Knight won't live forever.

I read somewhere that Texas has more billionaire alumni than any other FBS school and it's not even close for second. When you've got that kind of depth, you're never going to lack for money and you don't have to worry about catering to one guy like Oregon and Oklahoma State.

How many billionaire alumni do you need, though? Get one or two or three who are committed and you'll have all the money you ever need.

But the more you have, the less likely one or two can call the shots on everything. It's actually more about control than money.

If you're totally dependent on one or two guys you pretty much have to cater to their wishes.

I suppose I can see that, though I don't know if it has ever been bad for a school. Those guys do want to win, after all.

It was widely assumed that Kelly has his eyes on the Eagles job. Now that Gruden isn't going to Tennessee and would seem to be a great fit in Philly, I could see that changing things. I think, based on how close he came to going to Tampa last year, that Kelly wants to go to the NFL, but I don't know which teams would be interested in him. Hell, Philly might want Kelly over Gruden.

Gruden is supposedly going to wind up back in Oakland.

When you have Bobby Lowder flying the Auburn AD on his plane to secretly talk to Bobby Petrino it can be an issue. Didn't Lowder handpick Chizik as well? I know his power has tapered off a bit in recent years, but that's a lot of power. There are a lot of boosters who could have that kind of power, but they're smart enough to stay behind the scenes.

I thought I rememebered reading that Knight can listen to the coaching staff on the headsets if he wants... That's kind of nutty, but when you're funding an entire athletic department, they will let you do almost anything you want.

I'm not holding my breath on that happening.

That has more to do with the men coaching at OU and Texas. If somebody like Saban landed in Austin he might put together a Wooden-like dynasty.
