I thought Dykes went to Cal. Probably more work to do there, but greater upside in the long haul, IMO.

    4) It isn't in a glorified version of C-USA.

WKU commonly puts this in the contracts of its coaches. When Georgia hired Dennis Felton from WKU Georgia had to give WKU a home and home series.

Yeah, hard to figure out this move with Cincy in conference limbo. Maybe he figures he'll be back in the Big 12 when it all shakes out.

Is Chef too busy rubbing one out at this news to comment?

The last three Cincinnati coaches ended up at Michigan State, Notre Dame and Tennessee, so it obviously is a good stepping-stone program, but you would think Tuberville is done climbing, at least to those levels. He's 58. This was his last chance to move up, though maybe he didn't have any opportunities.

Cincinnati does seem like the kind of place Tuberville could retire at, and perhaps he wasn't getting along with the new president and athletics director at Texas Tech.

Tech is becoming a hell hole. At least TCU is closer to a cluster of D1 recruits. The program is really struggling for some identity right now, to me.

Were there better recruits in West Texas five years ago?

It's interesting that Frank Solich, Terry Bowden and Tommy Tuberville are all coaching in the state of Ohio now. They're all in the same boat: they are too old to ever make a run at a major program again, but they can build stable, safe jobs out of the spotlight.

Ohio is like the retirement community of college football coaches, I guess.

I could see Jim Tressel going that route in a couple years.

Didn't say that. I meant with TCU in the Big 12 now, it makes it harder for Tech to recruit the Metroplex. The appeal of Tech is weakening.

About the only thing Texas Tech had going for it --- apart from the personality of whomever happens to be coach at the time --- is they can say "We're in the Big XII. Yes, we're in Lubbock, but at least we're in the Big XII and SMU, Houston and North Texas are not."

As for Tuberville, didn't he go undefeated at Auburn one year? That's about as big time as it gets, so I figure he's been there, done that.
