    Sometimes the bars are helpful, like with linemen and linebackers. It can keep you from getting poked in the face or, say, a beanbag to the eye.

    I think the face mask goes beyond just aesthetics. If you are a lineman with a fewer bars, you might be less likely to try and gouge a guy at the bottom of the pile since someone else could do the same to you.
    I do think the increasing bars on the sides are due to the newer helmets to a certain extent. I just prefer a cleaner look.

    Nothing wrong with that Tennessee helmet. I think the checkered stripe is a clever idea.

    Geez, when I saw the first helmet post, I thought I was going to see a black helmet or something.

    The checkerboard design has been something of a Tennessee trademark for a long time, so it's not like they just pulled something out of their ass.
