I'm starting to think Ferentz may be in real trouble at Iowa.

Lost at Indiana yesterday, so they'll need 2 wins out of Purdue, at Michigan and Nebraska to just be bowl-eligible in that horrible Big Ten. He's 19-16 since the start of 2010, and 10-11 in the conference. All for a measly $3.875 million a season.

He has a lot of equity, even if Iowa has the slowest quarterback since Dan Marino.

If they lose out and the usual flurry of alcohol arrests, he could be in trouble.

EDIT: I think he benefits in that football is the only sport that makes any money at Iowa. Men's basketball is getting better but they are STILL paying Todd Lickliter 800k for the third year. I doubt they want a second fired coach on the payroll.

The unfortunate part for Iowa is that they really didn't find that high-level success while Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State were not elite. Now that window is closing and I don't think Iowa has the infrastructure to compete with those three plus Nebraska in the near future.

When was Ohio State not elite? Last season?

Just last season after Tattoo-gate. I think there was a sense that Ohio State would be reloading in Meyer's first year but that clearly hasn't happened.

Kirk Ferentz is a few seasons removed from an Orange Bowl win. Given its in-state talent pool, Iowa shouldn't expect a better football team than what Ferentz has provided, one that generally is competent but rarely is a threat in the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Michigan State, Wisconsin and Penn State clearly are better programs. That likely isn't going to change. If Iowa fires Ferentz, it will not be able to hire a coach for that same pay while paying off his severance package. The money isn't there.

Figure the Sun Belt might be where Kentucky finds its next coach. Not Malzahn, but Stockstill, Taggart, Hudspeth or Berry might be decent.
Malzahn might be a decent pick to move down the road to Fayetteville.

The flip side of that is if Iowa should be considered only a competent football program that is rarely a threat in the Big Ten (and I agree with that, except for the inclusion of Michigan State as a clearly better program), then he shouldn't be the sixth-highest paid coach in the country. It's not his fault for taking the money, but when you're behind only Brown, Saban, Stoops, Meyer and Miles when it comes to coaching salary, he can't get offended when fans expect more than a pretty non-competitive .500 team in what is a horrible Big Ten this season.

To be clear, I'm not saying Kelly would even entertain going to UT but his name will be thrown around as a possibility because that's what happens when Texas is looking for a head coach.

I wouldn't want follow Brown at Texas, I'd want to be the guy who followed the guy who replaces Brown at Texas.
