Vandy is the SEC coach executioner. UK axes Joker right after getting crushed by Vandy, UT axes Dooley right after getting crushed by Vandy, so who's next on the Vandy hit list?

How are all of these high-living schools going to find good coaches?

Jim Grobe? Vandy plays at Wake Forest on Saturday.

(I can't imagine Grobe getting fired given his body of work, but a loss to Vandy would mean his fourth straight losing season).

Really like Mike McIntyre. Good dude. Because of his SEC roots I see him landing at any of the three current openings.

Be especially intriguing choice for Arkansas.

Anything over four wins at San Jose State is an achievement. Nine is a miracle. (In the shoulda category, they also lost by three to Stanford after a receiver dropped a wide-open touchdown.)

Can he make that big of a leap? Managerially speaking, from the program he's at now to the SEC would be like going from eighth-grade coach to leading a high school state power. But there can't be a coach who has done a better job this year.

He kind of is "moving up" next year into the MWC. I just don't think Cal would take someone from SJSU. Especially not with the big TV deal. They'll want a "name." Another guy out this way worth checking out though is DeRuyter at Fresno State.
One thing that would work in Cal's favor if they let Tedford go is that it would be the top open job in a conference that has risen a lot in national prestige, throw in the improved facilities and they should be in a position to lure a big name - but the lack of buzz makes me wonder.

MacIntyre maybe could go to Kentucky, but there's no way Arkansas, Auburn or Tennessee takes him now. In five or six years and one or two jobs, he may be ready for one of those programs.

Western Michigan fired Bill Cubit. It's a good job at a historically-competitive MAC school.

It will not cost Cal $7 million to get rid of Tedford. You don't pay fired coaches off in a lump sum (unless they agree to a much-lower settlement). You pay his salary monthly over the life of his contract, and no longer ave to pay benefits.

When he gets another job (which he will), Cal will only have to pay the difference between his Cal salary and his new job, if the Cal salary is higher. When he gets a second job, Cal's contractual obligations will cease.

Guess here is that if Gruden goes anywhere, it would be Tennessee. He'll demand a long-term (5 or more years) deal with complete control, something he isn't likely to get in the NFL. He'll be able to pick his own players and basically be the campus god there.

If Tennessee gets Gruden, it will have to give him a deal similar to what Meyer got at Ohio State and Saban got at Bama. I'm guessing six or seven years with every dime guaranteed.
