I would like Alabama to go after an NFL coach when Nick Saban retires. I like Ken Whisenhunt.

Not true... There's a reason why Gruden and Cowher and some of the other bigger name coaches who have been out for more than a few years have stayed out... Teams don't want to give them the kind of absolute power that they would require to go back. That's not to say that some team eventually won't, but the notion that these guys are being sought after by any team with an opening is just false...

At some point with Gruden, you just have to conclude he isn't all that interested in coaching. He did just sign a five-year deal with ESPN that goes through 2016. I know those things can be overcome, but the fact that they have shrunk the booth and built the telecast around him -- for reasons that remain unfathomable to me -- is an indication that this is where he wants to be.

I think a lot of the speculation comes from recent comments he made about wanting to get back into coaching. I think he would be crazy to leave a gig as cush as the one he has, but with these guys, their egos are so out of control that they have to be wooed every year even if they have no desire to leave.

I read something about Gruden being an option in Philly if Reid is fired or steps down and I could see that job being one that would pique his interest.

How about Carolina, where he'd have a chance to work his Chucky-QB-camp magic on Cam Newton?

Going back to that why-Cowher/Gruden-aren't-in-as-much-demand-as-you-might-think idea from earlier in the thread, the Panthers might be desperate enough to give a big-name coach absolute power, especially now that they've fired their GM and have a personnel opening as well. Actually, Cowher might be a better personality/philosophical fit with Richardson in that role. I could see that happening after this season ends at 2-14 or so.

To be fair, Saban has given Alabama everything it asked for as well. The Crimson Tide:

1. is favored to win every game it plays

2. contends for the SEC and national championship every year

3. is in the running for every top recruit it wants

4. has broken the spirit of its in-state rival to the point that it's probably going to fire its coach two years after winning a national championship

I seriously doubt he would go back to college. His quarterbacks need to spend a hell of a lot more time in official meetings, learning the offense and the weekly game plan, than they're allotted by the NCAA.

I'm surprised he didn't wind up at Notre Dame. I remember his name came up for the Florida job a couple different times, but it was hard to see how serious a candidate he ever was. I'm pretty sure he interviewed for the Miami job, which was the one where one of the papers listed his alleged demands which included unlimited use of a jet and that his brother be guaranteed to be his successor if he stepped down. It seemed insane, even for coaches...

That doesn't strike me as insane. That strikes me as a guy who doesn't really want the job but wants people to think he does.

Cowher would be a great fit in Carolina. I was a little surprised he wasn't in the mix when Rivera got it, but that might have been right around the time Cowher's wife was dying... Not sure...

That's very possible. I think they all need to make sure other teams seem interested either for their own egos or to make ESPN or whatever TV network they're working for, to keep giving them raises...

Dan Mullen is fool's gold. Dude went 2-6 in the SEC last year- same as Joker Philips!- and all the Lesser Bulldogs have done this season is win against a laughable schedule. If they lose out, it wouldn't surprise me.
