Walsh and John Robinson didn't fare well in their second stints in the Pac-10.

When Gruden left the Raiders, it came after a flurry of supposed college interest. He was on the tarmac to go visit Ohio State, then the next year he was rumored for the Florida and Notre Dame jobs, and what it all turned out to be about was a way of signaling his interest so a team like the Bucs would make their play. Worth noting that the Bucs' deal with the Raiders was $8 million and four high draft picks just to talk to Gruden, even if he ended up turning down their offer. So the agent is in all likelihood busy right now getting ahead of the deal.

Wondering if Arkansas would have any interest in Art Briles? Or vice versa? The man can recruit Texas. I suspect his personality might appeal compared to the last two HCs.

Personality is less important than defense.

For the one or two that are interested, higher-ups at Southern Miss have gone from, "we're not considering making a change," on Ellis Johnson to "we can't comment on that at this time."

Death watch officially begins about 6:30 Saturday night, after Southern completes a perfect 0-12 season with a loss at Memphis.

Wasn't aware those guys have rings... Nobody is saying he should be in Canton, but the guy would be one hell of a hire for the Vols.

Entirely possible... I just don't think a NFL team would give Gruden the complete control he wants. I think his act plays a lot better at the college level than it does in the NFL.

Walsh v1.0 on The Farm was 17-7, then went on to what he was with the 49ers. V 2.0 won the Pac-10 in year one, but then deteriorated.

I think there is a reason why guys like Gruden, Cowher, Dungy and others haven't returned to the NFL. The days of giving a NFL coach full control are pretty much over. I'm trying to think if there is a coach other than Belichick who has complete control or something close to it. Is there any coach in the NFL who also has a GM title? Several years ago there were a handful who had both titles and a few where the GM was handpicked by the coach. Shanahan and Reid might have something close to it.

I could see Gruden taking a long look at likely NFL openings in San Diego and Philly, but teams might be hesitant to hire a guy who ran off his GM as soon as he won a title.

Those kind of power plays can work at the college level. I don't see them working in today's NFL.

Harbaugh has that control, Mizzou. Yes the 49ers have a GM, but it's a GM chosen by Harbaugh. Carroll has the same deal in Seattle.

The coach tops the org chart but the GM does the contracts. Make no mistake, though, about who's doing the picking on draft day and in roster cutdowns.

I remember thinking at the time when the Niners hired the GM that it was probably going to take them out of the Harbaugh sweepstakes... Needless to say I was thrilled to be wrong.

If memory serves, the Niners hired Baalke right before Harbaugh and I think Schneider was hired right after Carroll, maybe within the week...

But Baalke was on the pre-approved Harbaugh list -- that's why he got the job, because of the Harbaugh endorsement.
