Seriously, some schools need to realize where they sit on the pyramid of non-blatant-cheating-aided greatness and deal with it. N.C. State is one of those places. Chuck Amato wasn't good enough for them? All the guy did was win some big games and get them into bowl games regularly. O'Brien always choked in the big spot (including in his BC days), but they still were regular participants in tolerable postseason games. What else were you expecting from him?

We should really take NC State, Pitt, Arkansas and a few others and start "The Conference of Unrealistic Expectations." Somehow none of them will ever win the conference title outright.

Arkansas does not belong in that conversation. And Mississippi should sit at the head of that table.

You are seriously underestimating NC State's fanbase. It is large and passionate.

Large and passionate are such relative terms, huh?

How much of the N.C. State fanbase is simply the anybody-but-Carolina crowd?

    Goodbye, Auburn's Gene
Though I could never beat you enough
You had the balls to call yourself
A champion, thanks to your booster club
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they gave you Newton's game
They set him loose in Glendale
And he brought you all to fame

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like ass-scented candles in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
    When the draft took him
And I would have liked to beat you
    Three more times or six
Your candle burned out long before
    Your employment ever did

    Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever coached
First a joke at Iowa State
But this firing was the final roast
    Even when you left
    Oh they hounded and damned
All the papers had to say
Was Chizik was the product of Cam

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like ass-scented candles in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
    When the draft took him
And I would have liked to beat you
    Three more times or six
Your candle burned out long before
    Your employment ever did

    Goodbye, Auburn's Gene
From young men in Crimson clothes
Who see you as something more than shitty coach
More than just our failed Cyclone

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like ass-scented candles in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
    When the draft took him
And I would have liked to beat you
    Three more times or six
Your candle burned out long before
    Your employment ever did

I'm not so sure about getting rid of O'Brien, but it seemed like it was never going to end well after the Russel Wilson thing.

But Chuck Amato was a clown and never won anything without Rivers, who was a recruit he inherited. State fans are delusional and far too concerned about what goes on in Chapel Hill, but Amato had to go.

My favorite Chuck Amato moment came, IIRC, in his last season at NC St. They had a mediocre to shitty start to the year, and beat FSU in a squeaker in their fifth game of the season. Right after the final horn sounded, the ESPN talking head asked Amato about his critics, and Amato responds with something like "What critics?" or "Who?" with a really smug tone. State then went on to lose the remaining seven games on their schedule.
