The point is, Stanford can pay its football coach whatever it wants. Stanford can afford to pay its football coach $5 million a year. So can Oregon. So can Southern Cal. I'm guessing the other nine schools can't say that. Just because a school can afford to spend that kind of money on a football coach doesn't mean it should...

Shaw is the kind of guy that they might be able to keep forever if they make it worth his while. I bet if he gets $3M on a secure long-term deal, knowing it's his alma mater and his kids will be raised in one of the most idyllic and education-forward towns in America, he could have a good thing. Plus there's a benefit of being out here -- yeah you aren't the big dog with six pro teams and two other colleges, but you also don't have to spend 10 minutes at a press conference explaining why you just switched your starting cornerback.

$3M a year for a relatively headache-free existence? There's a lot to be said for that.

Also, Tyrone Willingham lives in the Bay Area and is great friends with Shaw's dad. I'm sure he'd be able to chip in his two cents on what lies outside The Farm.

Last SEC coach to switch schools was Tommy Tuberville, right?

Sadly, this is a lesson not many college coaches -- in football or basketball -- seem able to grasp.
They work their way into a good position, at a program they've built into a success and that pays well, and could have the keys to the kingdom if they want them. Pretty much a job for life in many cases, or at least a solid decade in others. And instead of seeing that, they chase a few more dollars at a college program or pro team that's not a success and where they have a 3-4 year window, max, to turn things around or else they're fired. It's a common character trait I've never really understood.

I kind of respect what Arkansas is trying to do...
