I think that a coach has to show some progress after two years. Or at least not a marked detoriation. But two years ago CU was simply a bad team. This year they were last in the country in points allowed. They scored 35 the last week to move out of cellar in points scored. They were the least competitive FBS school in the country, with the exception of Southern Mississippi, who fired their coach after only a year.

Recruiting has evaporated. The Buffs have only two Colorado kids signed. In-state kids worry that the program will be abmysial. And are not going to get quality out of state kids.

With as much money involved in BCS football a school can not to keep the Captain of the Titanic on for five years.

Another UCA alum here. I've only been to one on campus game since they've moved up to FCS from DII, but I was shocked at how much more exciting the atmosphere was. They even had a decent tailgating scene going on.

It was hard watching CU this year and think they were on track to do anything. The team looked disorganized on the field and it's hard to think Embree would have been able to overcome that when it came to recruiting.
That said - he should try and get an OC gig somewhere, anywhere and keep grinding. The reason Ty Willingham had a second shot was that his first shot was successful. I figure Turner Gill might get another shot at a non-BCS conference, and if things go to hell for Charlie Strong at any point - he'll get a second chance too.
It is nice in a way that the conversation has moved on to black coaches (not) getting second chances when for too long they were barely getting first chances.

I think it is a little simplistic to say that black coaches can't get second chacnes. The sample size is small and lots of white coaches don't get back in either. In hindsight, Gary Barnett looks better and better as a coach at Colorado and he has not returned, despite his Northwestern success and the fact that he won the Northern divison of the Big 12 several times.

Dennis Green went from Northwestern to Stanford a couple years later and through two NFL jobs. Herm Edwards got a second NFL job as did Tony Dungy.

Thanks for those examples, but I wasn't talking about the NFL.

Imagine owning a bad NASCAR team. You hire a driver on the cheap and acknowledge that he's unlikely to win the race. All you ask is that he stay with the pack, get his laps in and over time hopefully resources will allow you to upgrade the car and crew. Instead, he T-bones the flag stand on the parade lap. That's Embree.

Well, I'd say that scenario is a whole lot more likely than Monte being fired by the head coach.

Exactly. It was an unmitigated abortion for Ralphie this year and indefensible.

I suppose, but there aren't a whole lot of NFL defensive coordinator openings in late November.

It's semantics. Like an old high school coach friend of mine used to say, ol' Monte "got resigned."
