And that's the point. No one knows. Maybe he really was one of the few people using, and he would have been out of baseball by the age of 38. Maybe everyone was using, and in a clean league, he would have hit fewer homers, but with a higher batting average.

No one knows the answers to those questions, which leaves two options. Either the Hall of Fame bans everyone in the steroid era, since no one has any way of proving who used and who didn't, or the BBWAA votes for players based on their on-field achievements. The current system, where people are refusing to vote for Craig Biggio because he played with Roger Clemens and Andy Pettitte at the end of his career, is completely broken.

Any writer who tells you that they know who was using and who wasn't is lying, either to you, or more likely, to themselves. They might be able to make an educated guess on a few guys, but I'll bet they'd be wrong a lot more often than they like to admit.

Barry Bonds played in almost 3,000 games and had an OPS of over 1. He's the career leader in homers and walks and he won seven MVPs, which are voted on by the same writers who now think he's not a Hall of Famer. That's ridiculous.
