Wow. It will be interesting to know if this was his plan win or lose.

Unless there's an in-house heir apparent, the Cubs chances of landing a good manager just dropped some more.

Do you think Leyland was politely asked to step down? Six-seven years of contending but no World Series to show for it.

I doubt that. Maybe management knew he was thinking about it or had decided to, but pushing out a guy with Leyland's resume because you lost the ALCS is pretty risky unless you have a REALLY top replacement ready to go.

Probably right, but between this and the report that Scherzer might be too expensive for them, you wonder if it's the time-honored tradition of the rich guy flipping out because he didn't what he thought he deserved.

Leyland said he made the decision in early September. Doesn't sound like he was forced out at all.

    1. They said video replays would never become part of baseball. The very first time strike zones were superimposed on video screens back in the 1970s, the old fogeys bitched that it shouldn't even be allowed. Similar apolexy ensued the first time pitch speeds were flashed on the scoreboard.

    2. Nonsense. If you take too big a lead and get picked off, you're out.

So then you would just get a walk for the batter since they count as balls.

    You're missing the point.
It doesn't count as a ball if you actually pick the runner off.
It's the unsuccessful pickoff attempts that would count as balls.

There's no reason why there can't be a clock like a shot clock in the nba behind home plate that the pitcher and the second base umpire can see that starts at 12 as soon as the pitcher toes the rubber. If he doesn't throw to a base or home, the second base ump calls time and signals for a ball to be awarded.

I get the point. 2 unsuccessful pickoffs. there are 3 balls on the batter. just take a little bigger lead. unsuccessful attempt = walk.

Why is everybody trying to change the length of the game? Why would you want less of a great thing?
