Teams falling behind 0-2 are 10 for 48, which is not bad. Hardly time to despair.

The more noteworthy and reassuring stat is that the Cardinals were 19-23 against left-handed starters and 78-42 against righties. They were going to have a tough time winning this game no matter what.

Cards lost Game 1 in 1982 10-0 & won the series in 7.

Except they also should have lost Game 2 except for a pitch right over the middle at the belt called Ball 4.

I gained a whole new respect for John Hirschbeck and Jim Joyce last night.

After they reversed the call, they knew Metheny was going to come out of the dugout. Him and Joyce basically told him that he was going to get 1 minute to say whatever he wanted to say, and they weren't going to run him. They didn't let him get to Demuth, because if Metheny would have gotten to Demuth, he would have been dumped.

    Great piece of umpiring.

Hirschbeck and Joyce have always been good umps. DeMuth is a middle-of-the-pack ump who made a comically bad call.

Agreed. My question is - what can Matheny really say there? I've always wondered this about baseball arguments when the manager is "discussing" with an umpire a play in which very obviously the correct call was made. I can understand Matheny going out to get an explanation of how they came to reverse the on-field call, but beyond that, what can he possibly say?

I'm not great at reading lips, but I'm pretty sure the word "bullshit" featured prominently.

As anyone who has ever sat in a dugout knows, sometimes that's the worst view of the action in the ballpark.

Cardinals minor league pitcher posts Vine video that claims Lester doctored the baseball with "some substance."

    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/cardinals-prospect-accuses-sox-lester-cheating-article-1.1495268

MLB dismisses claims through a statement: "We cannot draw any conclusions from this video. There were no complaints from the Cardinals and the umpires never detected anything indicating a foreign substance throughout the game."

It looks bad, for sure, but I have a hard time believing Lester would do something like this on the game's biggest stage, with 100 cameras on him at all times. Or maybe I'm being naive, and the Cardinals didn't make a big deal of this because it happens all the time with most pitchers.

One of the last things Metheny said was "This is the World FUCKING Series"

He could have told Hirschbeck and Joyce that their mothers were the biggest whores in the world, and they weren't going to do anything.
