I don't know about sporting event, but supposedly the most-expensive baseball ticket:

But given the size of the stadium, I don't doubt what Michael says is true.

And if the Red Sox lose, it will become the second-most expensive ticket after Game 7.

How do the StubHubs, etc., of the world handle if-necessary games? Do you agree to the transaction but they only process the payment after Game 6 ends? Obviously prices will skyrocket whenever it becomes apparent that there will be a Game 7, so if the seller doesn't get any benefit at all in the event there's no Game 7, then I can't imagine there being any motive to sell.

But then, if you're risking $5,000 or whatever on a Game 7 happening, and all you get if it doesn't is the face value from the Red Sox, that's a big gamble.

World Series tickets are originally sold in strips. You buy a set for all four games, or three games, at one park. So anyone who buys a Game Seven ticket before Game Six is played is a chump. StubHub probably pays a premium for its Game Seven tickets because it buys up whole strips at a premium and can eat the loss due to profits from the earlier games.

From the Game 7 page on StubHub:

"If this game is not played, you'll automatically receive a full refund within 48 hours of the event being cancelled, including any service or shipping fees."

I should refute myself here and note that "most expensive ticket ever" refers to the top price on the spot resale market. In reality, most of the fans at tonight's game will be in on much cheaper tickets, most obtained by or through season ticket holders. It's fun to look at the big numbers at the top, but it's like evaluating automobile prices by only looking at Ferraris.

The Dropkick Murphys are scheduled to sing the national anthem tonight. I shit you not.

Also, Luis Tiant and Carlton Fisk will throw out the ceremonial first pitches. Tiant started Game 6 in 1975, and we all know what Fisk did.

It all almost makes me want to see the Cardinals take the next two, which would make for the most excellent celebratory gathering since "Carrie."

Boston team in strongly favorable position to win championship? That *never* goes wrong.

Luis Tiant is a fucking national treasure. In two nations.

Really that's not at all out of line with what I would have expected. When the Rangers made their first trip in 2010, yours truly (having been lucky enough to get drawn in the team's lottery for the right to buy a handful at face value), wound up feeling miserably guilty at the prospect of leaving the kids at home. SRO tickets for Game 3 (1st of the Series in Texas) were going for around $350. I dropped close to $1K for two upper-most-level seats to complement those I already had. Given that: 1) the Boston area's probably got a more concentrated set of deep(er) pockets than North Texas; and 2) Fenway seats about 10,000 fewer than the Ballpark in Arlington, I'm surprised they're not going for more.
